St. Mary’s City, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team opened its 2025 season with a hard-fought 13-11 loss to York College of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. Despite outscoring York 6-2 in the second half, the Seahawks could not overcome an early deficit in their season opener.

York took control early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first nine minutes, led by Cory Bergmann’s two goals and three assists from Davis Fisher. Junior attackman Joshua Martel put St. Mary’s College on the scoreboard with 2:14 left in the first quarter, but York responded quickly. After sophomore Declan Horton scored with 23 seconds remaining, Fisher netted another goal as time expired, giving the Spartans a 7-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter remained competitive, with York outscoring St. Mary’s College 4-3 to carry an 11-5 advantage into halftime. Aiden Doyle scored twice, and senior captain Nate Hochrein added two assists to help keep the Seahawks within reach.

St. Mary’s College controlled the second half, closing the gap with a 6-2 run. Horton and Martel each netted two goals, while Hochrein continued to facilitate the offense with two more assists. The Seahawks pulled within two goals with just over a minute remaining and won the final face-off, but both shot attempts went wide, allowing York to secure the victory.

Junior Matteo Ciccarello dominated at the face-off x, winning 18-of-25 draws and collecting a game-high 11 ground balls. St. Mary’s College capitalized on three of four extra-man opportunities and finished with a 28-20 advantage in ground balls. York held a narrow 41-38 edge in total shots and benefited from a plus-seven turnover margin.

Horton finished with four goals and an assist, while Hochrein matched his career-high with four assists. Martel and Doyle each recorded a hat trick, and junior defensive midfielder Nick Machiran contributed a goal and a career-best two assists. Sophomore goalie Ty Grove made five saves in the first half, while senior Cullen McKay recorded six stops in the second half.

York’s Fisher led all players with seven points, scoring two goals and adding five assists. Nate Schilling contributed three goals and two assists, and goalie Nash Womack made 14 saves. The Spartans entered the matchup receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association preseason Division III poll.

St. Mary’s College will travel to Juniata College on February 15 for a 3:00 p.m. matchup in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
