Candis Henson, a dedicated advocate for students and families in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), has been honored with the “Few of the Many Award” by County Executive Steuart Pittman in collaboration with the Caucus of African American Leaders. Henson, who has been with AACPS since 2007, plays a crucial role in coordinating wraparound services to ensure students receive the necessary support for academic and social success.
The annual awards celebrate individuals who exemplify resilience, dedication, and community impact, highlighting the strong connections between African Americans and their contributions to Anne Arundel County. This year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor,” recognizes those whose work has significantly benefited the local community.
Henson, an Annapolis native and proud AACPS alumna, has devoted her career to bridging gaps between schools and families, particularly for marginalized students. She collaborates with school and family liaisons to remove barriers to student success by leveraging school, family, and community resources.
“Everything I do for the youth and families in this area comes from my heart,” Henson said. “You never know who might change a young person’s outlook on life, and I hope, in some small way, I can be that person for at least one of the youth I work with.”
Beyond her role in AACPS, Henson serves as the middle school coordinator and family support specialist for Charting Careers, an Annapolis-based organization dedicated to mentoring and empowering youth through educational opportunities and family partnerships. She has also led college tours for young scholars and actively campaigned against youth-targeted tobacco marketing.
Additionally, Henson has organized impactful community events for Meade area schools, working alongside AACPS and Friends of Meade, a coalition of leaders committed to strengthening local schools.
Henson and fellow honorees will be recognized at a ceremony on March 19 at Maryland Hall.
