A serious crash in Edgewater on the afternoon of February 17 left a woman critically injured and resulted in DUI charges against one of the drivers.

Officers from the Southern District responded to the scene at approximately 1:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a two-vehicle collision on Mitchells Chance Road near Hamlet Club Drive. According to the preliminary investigation, a 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the centerline and collided with a 2015 Ford pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The passenger of the Ford, a 74-year-old woman from Upper Marlboro, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by a Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Neither driver reported injuries.

The operator of the Chevrolet, identified as 63-year-old Joseph Henry Illig Jr. of Edgewater, was arrested at the scene and is facing multiple charges related to driving under the influence. He has been charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence per se, and driving while impaired by alcohol. Additionally, he is charged with violating Maryland’s impaired driving laws after having two prior convictions and causing a life-threatening injury while under the influence of alcohol.

The driver of the Ford, a 78-year-old man from Upper Marlboro, was not injured in the crash. Authorities have not released further details regarding the condition of the injured passenger.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident. Cases involving DUI-related crashes with prior convictions carry severe legal consequences in Maryland. Officials emphasize the dangers of impaired driving and urge motorists to make responsible choices to prevent tragedies on the road.

The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not provided an update on whether additional charges may be filed.
