The St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation & Parks has announced that Tarzan: The Stage Musical will be the featured production for the 43rd season of Summerstock. The highly anticipated musical will be performed at Great Mills High School across two weekends, with eight shows scheduled from July 18–20 and July 25–27, 2025.
Based on Disney’s 1999 animated film and inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes, the stage adaptation brings high-flying adventure and an emotional journey to the stage. The production features music by rock legend Phil Collins, including iconic songs such as “You’ll Be in My Heart,” “Son of Man,” and “Two Worlds.” The stage musical, adapted by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang, includes five songs from the original film along with nine additional tracks written for the theatrical production.

The story follows an orphaned infant raised by a family of apes, growing up to become a man caught between two worlds. His life takes a dramatic turn when a group of explorers arrives, introducing him to others like himself for the first time. Among them is Jane, a young woman who captures his curiosity and heart. As Tarzan grapples with his identity, he must navigate the emotional and physical challenges that arise when his animal upbringing collides with his human instincts.
