ASHLAND, Va. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team clinched an 11-10 non-conference win over Randolph-Macon College on Feb. 22, 2025, fending off a late five-goal rally to secure their second victory in a row. The Seahawks (2-1) led 11-5 entering the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets (3-1) charged back, closing to within one with 44 seconds left. Senior goalkeeper Cullen McKay’s pivotal save and Jeremy Heath’s ground ball pickup in the clutch ensured the triumph, breaking a two-game losing streak against Randolph-Macon.
The game began with a back-and-forth first quarter, ending in a 2-2 tie as both teams exchanged goals. St. Mary’s seized momentum in the second, scoring three straight goals to lead 5-2 by 7:16. The Yellow Jackets responded with two goals, but the Seahawks tacked on two more before halftime, heading into the break up 7-4. In the third, Randolph-Macon’s Peyton Rodriguez scored to make it 7-5, only for St. Mary’s to erupt with four consecutive goals, extending their lead to 11-5 with 9:40 to play.

The fourth quarter tested the Seahawks’ resolve as Randolph-Macon unleashed a five-goal run, shrinking the gap to 11-10. After winning the face-off with 44 seconds remaining, the Yellow Jackets fired three shots in a final push. The first was blocked, the second went high, and McKay stopped the third, with Heath grabbing the loose ball to end the threat. “We had to dig deep,” McKay said, crediting his team’s composure under pressure.
St. Mary’s outshot Randolph-Macon 36-33 and led 24-23 in ground balls, while the Yellow Jackets won 13 of 25 face-offs and capitalized on both man-up opportunities. Senior Aiden Doyle topped the scoring with three goals and four points, with sophomore Declan Horton adding two goals, an assist, and three ground balls. Junior Matteo Ciccarello led with five ground balls, going 12-for-24 on face-offs. Heath and Joe Szymanski each forced two turnovers, with Heath securing three ground balls and Szymanski two. McKay’s 11 saves and two ground balls moved him to 2-0.
Matt Carter led Randolph-Macon with three goals, and Jack Twomey made 11 saves in defeat. The Seahawks face Hampden-Sydney (2-1) next on March 1.
