Blackjack, and its earliest predecessor “vingt-et-un” (21 in French), is one of the most popular casino games out there. It has a long history and is believed to have come about in the 16th or 17th century. The game is simple, which is part of its appeal. The mix of strategy and luck makes it exciting. Unlike roulette, which is a game of pure chance, you can increase your odds in blackjack, but it’s not as challenging to ‘learn the ropes’ as poker.

In traditional casinos, table etiquette is crucial. There are long-standing ‘rules’ of conduct. But how do things compare when you play online? In this article, we’ll talk about blackjack and the key differences between land-based blackjack etiquette and online blackjack etiquette.

Blackjack Etiquette in Land-based Casinos

Land-based casinos are known for their luxurious nature, and with so much at stake (quite literally in many cases), proper behavior is important. Although these rules are unwritten, all players need to behave in a certain way.

Examples of proper blackjack etiquette include

  • Not touching the cards in face-up games.
  • Only placing bets when prompted.
  • Not handling cards with both hands.
  • Using correct hand signals for hitting, standing, doubling down, and splitting to avoid any confusion.
  • Not placing objects over your cards.
  • Cutting the deck close to the middle.
  • Not touching your chips during the deal.
  • Organizing and stacking your chips appropriately.
  • Placing any cash on the table and not in the dealer’s hands.
  • Not advising other players.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol when playing at casinos.
  • Tipping the dealer periodically or when you win.

Live Dealer Games—The Link Between In-person and Online Blackjack

Live dealer blackjack shares plenty of similarities with the in-person game while also offering the convenience of online games. The atmosphere is as authentic as you can get without being there in person.

Etiquette-wise, you don’t have to worry about handling the cards with live dealer games. However, that’s not to say there aren’t unwritten etiquette rules to follow. Most live blackjack games have a chat feature. This allows you to communicate with the dealer and other players. Dealers are professionals, so it’s important to respect them as you would in a physical casino. Messages should be polite and relevant—and you should refrain from using inappropriate language or spamming the chat.

You should also avoid excessive delays because live blackjack runs on a set schedule. If you take too long to make decisions, it can slow down the game and disrupt the experience for others at the table.

What’s Different About Online Blackjack?

Standard online blackjack (as opposed to live dealer versions) doesn’t have etiquette needs. Without any physical gestures or verbal exchanges, there’s no requirement.

Unlike land-based casinos or live-dealer games, there is no human element. It’s simply player vs computer. This means things happen more quickly. Most platforms offering blackjack have automatic timers, so the only thing you need to be aware of behavior-wise is failing to make a move in time. If you do, it could mean there’s an automatic action, like standing or folding.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

There are mistakes you should avoid when playing online blackjack, these include

  • Not criticizing other players’ decisions—not everyone plays in the same way. Complaining about someone’s moves can come off as rude.
  • In live dealer online blackjack, do not misuse the chat feature with inappropriate messages or too many messages. You can get removed from the game.
  • Avoid distractions like scrolling on your cell phone and multi-tabling in online blackjack. The environment is less focused when you’re at home compared to in a physical casino, but it’s bad etiquette to be distracted. Not only that, but it can lead to costly mistakes due to rushed decisions.
  • Checking table limits before joining. Entering a game with stakes that don’t match your budget can cause you unnecessary stress (or an early exit).
  • Not ignoring basic strategy. If you play without a basic understanding of the best moves in blackjack, you risk losses. It can also frustrate more experienced players.

Why Etiquette Still Matters

Even though online casinos don’t demand as much etiquette as physical ones, it is still a part of the game. Following proper conduct matters, and it improves everyone’s experience. In physical spaces, etiquette is rooted in tradition, and the unspoken rules that exist help maintain the game’s integrity. In live dealer games, respect and playing at a reasonable pace make the experience positive for all. Ultimately, whether you’re playing in person or online, good manners improve the game and allow everyone to have a good time, win or lose.

Blackjack Etiquette Still Exists Online!

Blackjack etiquette, whether at a live dealer table or in a land-based casino, is essential. Both land-based casinos and online ones have a set of unwritten rules, but most are purely common decency, so don’t be afraid to play because of it. Respect the dealer, play at a reasonable pace, and behave appropriately, and you’ll have a good time. With respect to the dealer, the player, and the tradition of the game, the experience is better for you and other players, too.
