The Charles County Department of Health, the University of Maryland Charles Regional Hospital, and Blue Zones have partnered to launch Blue Zones Ignite, an initiative aimed at transforming Charles County into a healthier community by making healthy choices more accessible. Blue Zones, known for its global research on longevity and well-being, will work alongside county officials and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the region’s health landscape.
The initiative begins with an in-depth readiness and feasibility study designed to identify key areas where improvements can be made to enhance public health. The goal is to create an environment where healthier living becomes the easier choice in workplaces, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Blue Zones employs a community-based approach that focuses on modifying policies, infrastructure, and social networks to encourage positive health behaviors rather than relying solely on individual lifestyle changes.
Charles County Health Officer Dianna E. Abney emphasized the importance of collaboration in shaping a healthier future for residents. She noted that the county has already made progress in public health efforts and that partnering with Blue Zones will help address challenges and opportunities for further improvements. Abney stressed the value of community involvement in shaping a plan that will promote healthier living across all age groups.
Mary Hannah, Vice President of Population Health for UM Charles Regional, highlighted the role of the hospital in assessing health care needs and prioritizing wellness initiatives that will improve the quality of life for residents. She noted that a well-executed plan could reduce long-term health care costs by fostering healthier habits and preventive care.
Blue Zones’ approach to well-being is rooted in research conducted by its founder, Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and bestselling author. Through studying the world’s longest-living populations, Buettner and his team identified key environmental and lifestyle factors that contribute to longevity. Blue Zones projects aim to integrate these principles into modern communities by reshaping public spaces, improving food accessibility, and fostering social connections that encourage a healthier lifestyle.
Rather than focusing on individual behavior changes, Blue Zones emphasizes structural improvements that make it easier for residents to adopt healthier habits. The model aims to increase movement throughout daily activities, promote nutritious eating, and strengthen community engagement. By improving what Blue Zones calls the “Life Radius”—the area where people spend the majority of their time—communities can achieve measurable improvements in health outcomes.
Blue Zones CEO Ben Leedle expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that the initiative’s success depends on collaboration between local leaders and residents. He emphasized that the project will create a roadmap for sustainable change, leading to improvements in overall well-being, reductions in preventable diseases, and long-term economic benefits.
As part of the initial assessment, the Blue Zones team will engage with community organizations and local government officials to evaluate existing health trends, challenges, and opportunities for policy-driven improvements. Once the assessment is complete, a transformation plan will be developed to guide Charles County toward healthier living conditions.
Local leaders expect the project to have a lasting impact on the community by improving access to nutritious food, encouraging active living, and fostering a supportive social environment. The initiative has already seen success in other communities across the country, with documented reductions in obesity and smoking rates and millions of dollars in healthcare savings.
The Charles County Department of Health and its partners encourage residents to stay informed about the Blue Zones Ignite initiative as the assessment process begins. Updates will be provided as the project progresses, and community involvement will be a key factor in shaping the county’s long-term health improvement strategy.
