The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team faced a tough stretch over the weekend, dropping back-to-back games, including a road loss to Marymount University and an extra-inning battle at home against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Seahawks Shut Out by Marymount

St. Mary’s (0-2) traveled to face Marymount University (7-1) in a non-conference matchup but struggled offensively, falling 5-0.
Marymount took an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second and adding another run in the third. The Saints capped off their scoring in the fourth inning with two more insurance runs.
The Seahawks had an opportunity to break through in the fourth when Ian Walters led off with a double, but they were unable to bring him home. St. Mary’s remained scoreless for the rest of the game as Marymount’s pitching staff controlled the contest.

Extra-Inning Heartbreak Against RPI

St. Mary’s returned home for their first game at Hawk’s Nest Field, looking to bounce back against RPI (1-2). The Seahawks rallied from a four-run deficit to force extra innings but ultimately fell 8-6 in 10 innings.
RPI jumped ahead 3-2 after three innings. St. Mary’s plated two runs in the first, as Ian Walters’ single drove in Cole Tarleton and Aaron Wathen.
After the Engineers put up three more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2, the Seahawks responded in the bottom half of the inning. Tarleton’s sacrifice fly brought home Wathen, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk.
Momentum swung in St. Mary’s favor in the sixth inning when Trevor Smith launched a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 6-5. Tarleton, who had singled earlier, scored on the blast.
With the game on the line in the eighth, Adrian Auber delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to score Tarleton from third, tying the game at 6-6.
The contest extended into the 10th inning, where RPI broke through with two runs. St. Mary’s had one final chance in the bottom of the inning, and George Berbakos led off with a single. However, the Seahawks were unable to bring him home, sealing an 8-6 defeat.
