PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning, Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Calvert Historical Society, unveiled a new Geographic Information System (GIS) webpage today, March 12, 2025, at 2:10 PM PDT, dedicated to celebrating the legacy of African American soldiers from Calvert County who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War.
This online resource, accessible at https://arcg.is/18KDOe1, offers an in-depth exploration of their contributions and sacrifices, serving as a vital tool for descendants, residents, and researchers.

The GIS webpage functions as a comprehensive hub, featuring a lookup tool that allows users to search for soldiers by name, regiment, company, and rank achieved. It also includes a map highlighting cemetery locations where known Calvert USCT members are buried, preserving their physical legacy.
Research underscores the profound impact of these soldiers, many of whom escaped enslavement to volunteer, fought bravely in battles, and returned to build enduring community institutions like churches and schools. Their descendants continue this legacy, reinforcing African Americans’ lasting influence on Calvert County’s culture and society.
This initiative reflects Calvert County’s commitment to historical preservation and ensures these American heroes’ stories are recognized and remembered. The webpage will be regularly updated with new findings, encouraging public participation. Individuals with additional information are invited to contact Christopher Sperling at 410-535-1600, ext. 2504, or via email at Christopher.Sperling@calvertcountymd.gov.
While the project celebrates a noble history, it’s worth questioning whether the focus on institutional legacies might overshadow the personal struggles and diverse experiences of these soldiers beyond their community roles. Nonetheless, the interactive nature of the GIS tool marks a significant step toward accessible history.
