HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland baseball team (0-8) faced Hampden-Sydney (7-9) in a mid-week doubleheader on March 12, 2025, dropping both games, 4-2 and 10-2, as the Seahawks struggled to maintain early momentum against the Tigers’ late surges.

In Game 1, Hampden-Sydney took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. St. Mary’s responded in the fourth when George Berbakos, hit by a pitch, scored on a throw attempt to second, tying the game at 1-1.

The Tigers pulled ahead in the sixth, scoring three runs to lead 4-1. In the seventh, Ian Walters led off with a hit, followed by an Avery Sims single, advancing Walters to second. Walters scored on a wild pitch, narrowing the gap to 4-2, but the Seahawks couldn’t rally further, ending the seven-inning game. Sims and Walters accounted for the team’s two hits, while Tommy Brill pitched a complete six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five against 29 batters.

Game 2 saw Hampden-Sydney score two runs in the second inning. The Seahawks tied it at 2-2 in the third, with Will Wilson and Aaron Wathen singling, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Avery Sims to advance Wilson to third. Cole Tarleton’s RBI single and a throwing error on Trevor Smith’s at-bat allowed Wathen to score. The Tigers responded decisively, scoring six runs in the fourth to lead 8-2, and added two more in the sixth, securing a 10-2 victory. Ian Walters led with two hits, Tarleton recorded the lone RBI, and Anthony Walsh took the loss, allowing seven earned runs over three innings. Ryder Chalk, Nick Russo, and Ryan Matthews also pitched.

St. Mary’s, a Division III program in the United East Conference, is still seeking its first win of the season. Hampden-Sydney, also D-III in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, improved to 7-9. The teams will face off again on March 15 for another doubleheader in Lancaster, Pa., at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. St. Mary’s, with about 1,600 students, plays home games at the Hawk’s Nest, but this road stretch tests their resilience early in the season, per the college’s athletics site.

The Seahawks’ offensive struggles—four total hits across both games—and pitching challenges, especially in Game 2, highlight areas for growth. While tying both games early showed promise, their inability to counter Hampden-Sydney’s big innings suggests a need for better late-game execution.
