ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team secured a commanding 22-7 victory over Hartwick College on Sunday, March 16, 2025, marking their second consecutive win. The non-conference matchup, which improved St. Mary’s record to 2-4, doubled as a celebration of the life and legacy of Jamie L. Roberts, a beloved alumna from the Class of 2011. Hartwick, led by Seahawks alumna Nora Fallon-Oben ’10, fell to 1-3 with the loss.
The game honored Roberts, a three-year goalkeeper for St. Mary’s who earned Second Team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors in 2010. Beyond her athletic achievements, Roberts was known for her leadership and compassion. In 2014, while cycling across the country to raise awareness for young adults affected by cancer, her life was tragically cut short. Her mantra, “Live Like Jamie,” continues to inspire, encouraging dedication, support for others, and a zest for life. In tribute, St. Mary’s senior captain Madison Laine and Hartwick’s Katrina Marten wore Roberts’ No. 32 jersey during the game.

The contest began competitively, with Hartwick’s Kristen Vaccarelli scoring twice early to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead at 12:54 in the first quarter. St. Mary’s responded swiftly, as sophomore attacker Grace Maurice sparked a three-goal run with a goal and an assist, flipping the score to 3-2 by the end of the period. The second quarter saw Hartwick tie the game at 4-4, fueled by Vaccarelli’s efforts, but the Seahawks surged ahead with five unanswered goals, leading 9-4 by halftime.
The third quarter proved decisive. After Hartwick narrowed the gap to 9-5, St. Mary’s unleashed a 13-2 run over the final 27:33, including a 7-0 fourth-quarter blitz, sealing the 22-7 rout. The Seahawks dominated statistically, outshooting Hartwick 43-16, collecting 26 ground balls to Hartwick’s 14, and securing an 18-10 edge in draw controls.
Senior captain Hailey Betch led St. Mary’s with a standout performance, recording season-highs of five assists and eight points, alongside her fourth hat trick of the year with three goals. Sophomore midfielder Sanne Elling set a career-high with five goals, while Laine notched four goals, reaching her 100th career point. Maurice contributed a goal and three assists, and junior attacker Katelin Scala added a three-goal hat trick. Senior captain Colin Horton scooped up five ground balls, and sophomore defender Claire Boudreau controlled the draw circle with a game-high 10 wins. In goal, junior Isabel Gautreaux made four saves in 35:55, with sophomore Allie Greeley stopping one shot in the final 24:05.
For Hartwick, Vaccarelli led with four goals and two assists, while Brianna Liebro anchored the defense with five draw controls and four caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Brooke Lynett made nine saves but couldn’t stem the Seahawks’ offensive tide.
The victory highlighted St. Mary’s depth, with six players scoring three or more points. The team’s plus-10 turnover margin and 12 caused turnovers underscored their defensive prowess. Hartwick struggled with 29 turnovers, dropping their second straight game.
Next, St. Mary’s faces No. 11 York (Pa.) on March 19 at 4:30 p.m. in York, Pa., followed by a matchup against No. 23 Messiah on March 23 at 2 p.m. in Grantham, Pa.
