LA PLATA, Md. — A fatal collision on United States Route 301 claimed the life of a motorcyclist Tuesday evening, prompting a detailed investigation by Maryland State Police. The crash, which occurred around 5:13 p.m. near Holly Lane in Charles County, involved a motorcycle and a sedan, leaving one person dead and another injured.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack and the MSP CRASH Team, Aundre Ewings, 29, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, was riding a 2005 Honda CBR-1000 northbound on Route 301. At the same time, Tony Pattillo Jr., 31, of Dale City, Virginia, was driving a 2018 Chrysler 300 and attempting to cross the northbound lanes from Holly Lane. Authorities say the Chrysler failed to yield to oncoming traffic, entering the path of the motorcycle. The Honda struck the driver’s side of the Chrysler, ejecting Ewings from the bike.
Ewings was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Pattillo sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Charles Regional Hospital in La Plata for treatment.
Troopers from the La Plata Barrack were joined by deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to secure the scene and manage traffic, which was disrupted for several hours as investigators worked. The Maryland State Police CRASH Team, a specialized unit trained to handle complex collision reconstructions, took over the investigation due to the severity of the incident.
Investigators are still piecing together the events leading up to the collision. Sergeant J. Zimmerman of the MSP CRASH Team is leading the effort and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses can contact Zimmerman at (301) 392-1231 or email justin.zimmerman@maryland.gov. The case, identified as 25-MSP-009101, will be reviewed by the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed once the investigation concludes.
