PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A serious motor vehicle collision involving a school bus and a box truck claimed one life and injured several others on Route 231 near Sea Gull Beach Road on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to the scene shortly after 9 a.m., initiating a response that closed the roadway and prompted a detailed investigation by the Crash Reconstruction Unit.
The school bus, carrying 12 students and a driver, was involved in the crash. Emergency crews evaluated all occupants, and two students were transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center with minor injuries. The condition of the remaining students and the bus driver has not been disclosed, though no additional transports from the bus were reported.
The box truck driver, identified as Richard Yonathan Murillo Vera, 50, of Crofton, was also taken to CalvertHealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. A passenger in the truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ground EMS for treatment. Details about the passenger’s identity and current condition remain unavailable.
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is working to determine the cause of the collision. Authorities have not released preliminary findings regarding factors such as speed, road conditions, or potential mechanical issues. Route 231 at Sea Gull Beach Road was shut down following the incident, with drivers advised to seek alternate routes as emergency operations and investigative efforts continued.
