ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland sailing teams continued their strong spring season over the March 22-23 weekend, securing three top-three finishes across regional regattas. The Seahawks claimed their fourth victory of the season at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point Open Team Race, took second at the Admiral Moore Team Race hosted by SUNY Maritime College, and finished third at the Hanbury Trophy hosted by Christopher Newport University.
At the Kings Point Open Team Race, St. Mary’s dominated with a 16-1 record, dropping just one race to Cornell University (3-4-5) in Round 1. At the Hanbury Trophy, St. Mary’s placed third among nine teams with 141 points, edging out the University of South Florida (151 points). Senior skipper Max Kleha and junior crew Gina Bonazelli finished fourth in Division A with 61 points, earning two fourth-place and two fifth-place finishes across nine races. First-year skipper Scott Opert and sophomore crew Siena Adduci took fourth in Division B with 80 points.
The Seahawks’ success builds on a competitive spring, with the Kings Point win marking their fourth team race victory of 2025. The program, part of the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), has a history of excellence, often competing against top Division I and III programs, according to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association website.
Next, St. Mary’s hosts the Superstar Team Race on March 29-30 at the Teddy Turner Waterfront, starting at 10 a.m. The team will also compete in the MAISA Spring Women’s Conference Championship in Annapolis, hosted by Navy, and the Hampton Pirate Team Race at Hampton University, both beginning at 10 a.m. on the same weekend. These events offer the Seahawks a chance to maintain their momentum as the season progresses.
