LEONARDTOWN, MD – The St. Mary’s County Board of Education has approved two key administrative appointments, Superintendent of Schools Dr. J. Scott Smith announced following the board’s meeting on March 26, 2025.
Joseph Wysokinski has been named Director of Maintenance in the Department of Maintenance, effective March 31, 2025. Wysokinski has been serving as the Acting Director of Maintenance and brings extensive experience in facility management and operations. He holds a master’s degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University and a bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg University.


In his new role, Wysokinski will oversee maintenance operations across St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS), ensuring facilities are safe, efficient, and well-maintained. The department manages routine maintenance, emergency repairs, and long-term infrastructure projects, all critical components in supporting student learning environments.
Katie Kortokrax has been appointed Chief Academic Officer in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Currently serving as the principal of Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary School, Kortokrax has played a significant role in curriculum development and school leadership. She holds a master’s degree from Towson University and a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University. Her appointment will take effect on July 1, 2025.
As Chief Academic Officer, Kortokrax will oversee curriculum planning, instructional strategies, and professional development programs for educators. The role is instrumental in shaping academic policies and ensuring students receive high-quality instruction aligned with state and federal education standards.
The appointments come as part of the board’s ongoing efforts to enhance leadership within SMCPS. Superintendent Smith expressed confidence in both Wysokinski and Kortokrax, highlighting their experience and commitment to student success.
