ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team fell 19-5 to No. 14 University of Lynchburg on March 30, 2025, ending a three-game win streak. The Seahawks dropped to 6-4, while the Hornets improved to 5-4 in the Sunday afternoon matchup at JLR Stadium.

Lynchburg dominated early, scoring eight unanswered goals in the first quarter. St. Mary’s responded in the second when senior captain Nate Hochrein opened the Seahawks’ tally three minutes in. The Hornets added four more before Hochrein scored again, narrowing the gap to 12-2 at halftime. In the third, Lynchburg’s Jake Rust netted two quick goals, but senior attackman Keegan Preis answered for St. Mary’s with under a minute left, making it 14-3. The fourth quarter saw Lynchburg extend its lead with four consecutive goals. St. Mary’s seniors Aiden Doyle and sophomore Declan Horton scored late, both assisted by Preis, but the Hornets sealed the 19-5 victory.

Despite the loss, St. Mary’s outshot Lynchburg 45-42. The Hornets held advantages in face-offs (16-for-28) and ground balls (29-21). Lynchburg converted 2 of 3 extra-man opportunities, while St. Mary’s went 2-for-4. Hochrein led the Seahawks with two goals, and Preis contributed a goal and two assists. Senior captain Quinnten Hatfield marked his 50th career caused turnover and grabbed three ground balls. Junior Matteo Ciccarello won 10 face-offs and led with four ground balls, while junior defenseman Cooper Dunwoody caused a career-high two turnovers. Junior goalie Ty Grove made six saves in 49 minutes.

For Lynchburg, Rust and Riley Hastings each recorded three goals and two assists. Goalie Andrew Miller stopped 16 shots and added a goal and an assist in 50:15 minutes. The Hornets’ third straight win showcased their offensive depth and defensive resilience.

The game highlighted milestones for St. Mary’s players, but Lynchburg’s early surge and late push proved decisive. The Seahawks next face Cairn (0-6) on April 8 in Langhorne, Pa., at 4 p.m., followed by a home matchup against No. 18 Dickinson (6-4) on April 12 at 2 p.m., themed as the Spring Break-a-Sweat/Morgan’s Message Game.
