BALTIMORE — The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 on Wednesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, improving their record to 2-4 in the American League East. The Orioles, now 3-3, suffered their first shutout of the young 2025 season in front of 18,146 fans. Boston’s pitching and timely hitting secured the victory in a game that lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes.

Garrett Crochet earned the win for the Red Sox, delivering a stellar performance. The left-hander pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits, issuing one walk, and striking out eight. His 1.38 ERA reflects his strong start to the season, now standing at 1-0. Aroldis Chapman closed the game, earning his first save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one and walking one in 18 pitches.

Boston struck first in the second inning when Trevor Story launched a solo home run off Orioles starter Zach Eflin, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Story’s blast, his first of the season, came with one out. The Red Sox added two more runs in the fifth. Rafael Rafaela drove in a run with a single, and Rafael Devers followed with a two-out RBI double, scoring Story to make it 3-0.

Story led the Red Sox offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Devers went 2-for-4, including a double and an RBI, while Kelly Campbell added two doubles in a 2-for-4 night. Boston collected 10 hits but left seven runners on base and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Eflin took the loss for Baltimore, dropping to 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA. He pitched six innings, surrendering eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five. The Orioles’ bullpen—Bryan Baker, Gregory Soto, and Cionel Pérez—held Boston scoreless over the final three innings, but the offense couldn’t rally. Baltimore managed just four hits, with Teoscar Laureano, Ryan Mountcastle, Ramón Urías, and Jordan Westburg each recording one. The Orioles went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position and left four on base.

Defensively, both teams executed double plays. Boston’s Wilyer Abreu threw out Westburg at first from right field, assisting in one of two double plays. Baltimore’s Laureano cut down Story at second from left field, and Eflin picked off Alex Bregman at first. The game, played under overcast skies with a temperature of 57 degrees and a 5 mph wind, began at 6:37 p.m.

The Red Sox, fifth in the AL East, leaned on Crochet’s dominance and Story’s power to snap a potential losing streak. The Orioles, fourth in the division, struggled to generate offense against Boston’s pitching. According to MLB.com, this matchup marked an early test for both teams as they navigate the 2025 season, which began the previous week.

Umpires David Rackley (home plate), Edwin Moscoso (first base), Tom Hanahan (second base), and Chris Guccione (third base) officiated the contest. The Red Sox and Orioles will continue their series in Baltimore, with both teams aiming to climb the AL East standings.
