ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team battled No. 7 Salisbury University on April 5, 2025, reducing an 11-goal deficit to six in the third quarter before falling 18-11 in a non-conference matchup at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The Seahawks (4-7) faced their fourth Top 15 opponent this season, showing resilience against their in-state rival but unable to secure the upset.

The game began with St. Mary’s striking first, as senior captain Madison Laine scored unassisted just 2:19 in, giving the Seahawks an early edge. Salisbury responded with an 11-2 run over the next 27:41, led by Miranda Mears’ five goals and Julianna Ott’s three, building an 11-3 halftime lead. The Sea Gulls extended their advantage to 14-3 in the third quarter with three straight goals, but St. Mary’s rallied, outscoring Salisbury 5-0 in the period’s closing minutes. Senior captain Colin Horton netted two of those goals, trimming the deficit to 14-8.

Salisbury regained control in the fourth, opening with four consecutive goals to push their lead to 18-8 with 10:24 remaining. The Seahawks closed the game with the final three scores over the last 7:33, with Horton and Laine contributing, but the effort fell short at 18-11.

Salisbury dominated key stats, outshooting St. Mary’s 36-27 and forcing eight of the Seahawks’ 14 turnovers for a +6 turnover margin. The Sea Gulls controlled 22 of 32 draws and collected 11 ground balls to St. Mary’s eight. Salisbury converted 5 of 7 free-position shots, while the Seahawks went 4-for-6.

Horton led St. Mary’s with four goals and an assist, adding five draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Laine scored three goals and assisted once, also causing a turnover. Junior defender Carsyn Smith recorded two caused turnovers, two draw controls, and a ground ball. Sophomore goalie Allie Greeley, entering in relief, made seven saves and grabbed two ground balls over the final three quarters.

For Salisbury, Mears topped all scorers with six goals, while Ott added four goals and seven draw controls. Goalkeeper Paige Ellis allowed seven goals, making one save in 45:44.

The game marked another test for St. Mary’s against ranked competition this season, per NCAA Division III standings. Salisbury, a perennial powerhouse, holds a strong record against in-state foes, according to the university’s athletics site.

St. Mary’s next hosts Wilson (1-9, 0-0 UEC) on April 8 at 5:30 p.m., featuring “Gold Rush” and “Morgan’s Message” themes. They follow with Cedar Crest (4-3, 1-0 UEC) on April 12 at 4:30 p.m., celebrating Senior Day and “Spring Break-A-Sweat.” Both games are at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
