PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum will unveil a new exhibit on April 12, 2025, celebrating 80 years of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS). Titled “80 Years of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” the display highlights the school’s history, its developmental test pilots, flight officers, and engineers, and its pivotal role in naval aviation. Located in Southern Maryland, a hub for Navy and Marine Corps flight testing, the exhibit offers an in-depth look at the profession and its training ground.

Cmdr. Travis Hartman, USNTPS Commanding Officer, emphasized the school’s impact. “USNTPS transformed flight test education and inspired generations of leaders who push the boundaries developing Navy and Marine Corps aerospace technology,” he said. “This exhibit is a tribute to that legacy and looks forward to the future of aviation innovation. We are excited to share this with visitors and, hopefully, future testers.”

The exhibit features interactive displays detailing the high-stakes work of developmental test pilots and engineers in shaping early aircraft and subsystems. It traces key milestones in USNTPS history, from its founding in 1945 to its current global reputation, and offers a glimpse into the rigorous curriculum that trains aviation professionals. Open through 2026, the exhibit aims to educate visitors and inspire the next generation of aerospace talent.

USNTPS, based at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, is renowned for its demanding program, serving all U.S. military branches and international partners. The school has trained nearly 100 NASA astronauts, including pioneers like John Glenn, Alan Shepard, and Wally Schirra, according to Naval History and Heritage Command records (history.navy.mil). It also supports the U.S. Army and remains a cornerstone of developmental flight test education.

Developed with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), USNTPS’s parent command, the exhibit underscores the school’s role as a pipeline for NAWCAD’s test squadrons. NAWCAD, headquartered in Patuxent River, manages test ranges, labs, and aircraft across sites in Maryland, New Jersey, and Florida, supporting the Navy and Marine Corps’ aviation needs.

The museum, located near the base, provides a fitting venue to showcase this legacy, drawing visitors to explore a critical yet often overlooked aspect of naval aviation history.
