ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team maintained its perfect record in United East Conference play with a commanding 22-4 victory over Wilson College on April 8, 2025. The Seahawks (5-7, 2-0 UEC) showcased their dominance at home, improving to 2-0 in league action, while the Phoenix (1-10, 0-1 UEC) suffered their first conference loss of the season.
The game started competitively, with Wilson’s Paige Ney tying the score at 1-1 with 8:14 left in the first quarter and narrowing the gap to 4-2 at the 3:56 mark. However, St. Mary’s responded decisively, launching a 7-0 run that stretched their lead to 11-2 by midway through the second period. Leading 13-3 at halftime, the Seahawks sealed the win with a 9-1 scoring edge in the second half, overwhelming the Phoenix defense.
St. Mary’s controlled nearly every statistical category. The Seahawks held a 44-5 advantage in shots, with 31 on goal compared to Wilson’s 3. Their defense forced 20 of Wilson’s 34 turnovers, resulting in a +17 turnover margin (17-34). St. Mary’s also led 28-13 in ground balls and won 19 of 29 draw controls. Offensively, they converted 3 of 7 free-position shots.
Senior attacker Ella Baynes (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) led the Seahawks with a standout performance, recording season highs of three goals and three assists. She also contributed two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Senior captain Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) matched Baynes with three goals, adding an assist, a ground ball, a caused turnover, and a draw control. Sophomore attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire) set career highs with two goals and three assists, alongside a ground ball and a draw control. Defensively, Kayla Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) each collected four ground balls, while Smith, junior attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), and sophomore defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) each secured four draw controls.
For Wilson, Paige Ney scored twice to lead the Phoenix, while goalkeeper Kaelynn Goff made 14 saves in a valiant effort against St. Mary’s relentless attack.
The Seahawks’ balanced performance underscored their strength in conference play. According to the United East Conference website unitedeastconference.com, St. Mary’s is one of only two teams still undefeated in league standings after two games. The victory improved their overall record to 5-7, a turnaround from a challenging non-conference slate, as they now focus on securing a top spot in the UEC.
Wilson, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm. The Phoenix entered the game with a 1-9 record, and their 34 turnovers against St. Mary’s highlighted ongoing difficulties. The loss dropped them to 0-1 in conference play, with their next chance to rebound coming later in the week.
St. Mary’s will look to extend their conference streak on April 12, when they host Cedar Crest (4-4, 1-1 UEC) at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The 4:30 p.m. matchup will double as Senior Day and the Spring Break-A-Sweat event, adding extra significance to the occasion.
