EWING, N.J. — St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s track and field athlete Rocksann Smith achieved a standout performance at the TCNJ Heptathlon in Ewing, New Jersey, earning 3,772 points to set a new school record and qualify for the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference (AARTFC). Competing over two days, Smith also broke the St. Mary’s record in the long jump, marking a significant milestone for the Seahawks’ program.

Smith’s performance across the heptathlon’s seven events—100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, high jump, javelin throw, long jump, and shot put—demonstrated versatility and skill. She set personal records in the 100-meter hurdles (16.37 seconds, 670 points), 800-meter run (2:51.73, 446 points), and tied her personal best in the shot put (9.50 meters, 497 points), securing fourth place in that event. Her long jump of 4.88 meters not only earned 527 points but also established a new St. Mary’s school record, marking her outdoor debut in the event. In the javelin throw, Smith took third place with a 27.90-meter throw, adding 437 points. She also scored 640 points in the 200-meter dash (27.88 seconds) and 555 points in the high jump (1.44 meters). Her cumulative score of 3,772 points surpassed the previous St. Mary’s heptathlon record, though specific prior record details were not available.

The heptathlon, a grueling two-day competition, tests athletes’ endurance and adaptability across sprinting, jumping, and throwing disciplines. According to the NCAA, heptathlon scoring rewards consistency and excellence, with points assigned based on performance metrics like time, distance, or height. Smith’s achievement places her among the region’s top multi-event competitors, with her AARTFC qualification signaling potential for further success at the regional championships, typically held in May.

St. Mary’s track and field program has seen growing recognition, with athletes like Smith contributing to its competitive presence in the United East Conference. The team’s season includes meets across the Mid-Atlantic, offering opportunities to build on early successes. Smith’s record-setting performance underscores the program’s focus on developing well-rounded athletes capable of excelling in demanding events like the heptathlon.

Looking ahead, the Seahawks are set to compete at the Oscar Moore Invitational in Glassboro, New Jersey, on April 12, where Smith and her teammates will aim to continue their momentum. The invitational, hosted by Rowan University, typically draws regional competitors, providing a platform for St. Mary’s athletes to test their skills against strong fields.

Smith’s accomplishments highlight her potential as a leader for the Seahawks. Her ability to set personal and school records while debuting in outdoor events like the 200-meter dash and long jump suggests room for further growth. As the season progresses, her performances will likely draw attention at upcoming meets, including regional qualifiers.
