RICHMOND, Va. — The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, surged to a 10-6 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, on April 16, 2025, at The Diamond. The Baysox (7-4) unleashed a season-high four home runs and six extra-base hits, setting a new single-game record for runs scored in a dominant performance against the Flying Squirrels (2-9).

The Baysox struck early in the second inning against Richmond’s starting left-hander Joe Whitman (0-1), who took the loss. Silas Ardoin opened the frame with a solo home run to right-center, followed by Adam Retzbach’s three-run blast, his first at the Double-A level, giving Chesapeake a 4-0 lead. The lead doubled in the fourth inning when Jeremiah Jackson delivered a bases-clearing double and Ardoin added an RBI infield single. Frederick Bencosme extended the advantage to 9-0 in the fifth with a solo home run, one of four homers on the day.

Chesapeake’s starting right-hander Alex Pham, the Orioles’ No. 29 prospect, held Richmond scoreless through four innings but faltered in the fifth. He surrendered a three-run homer to Aeverson Arteaga and a single to Carter Howell, ending his outing. Pham finished with 4.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts in a no-decision. Right-hander Keagan Gillies (1-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings despite allowing a two-run homer to Jairo Pomares. Gillies recorded one strikeout.

In the ninth, Creed Willems hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, pushing the Baysox lead to 10-5. Right-hander Daniel Lloyd secured his first Double-A save, pitching the final three innings and allowing one run in the ninth. The Baysox’s offensive outburst included a season-high 10 runs, surpassing their previous highs in extra-base hits and homers, as noted on the team’s website.

Richmond struggled to keep pace, with their pitching staff unable to contain Chesapeake’s power. The Flying Squirrels’ season has been challenging, with their 2-9 record reflecting early struggles in the Eastern League, per MiLB.com. The Baysox, meanwhile, continue to showcase their depth, with contributions from prospects like Retzbach and veterans like Gillies.

The Baysox remain on the road for the second game of their six-game series against Richmond on April 17. Right-hander Zach Fruit is slated to start for Chesapeake against left-hander John Michael Bertrand for Richmond, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at The Diamond. Fans can follow live updates via the Baysox’s official website or MiLB’s game center.
