HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — The Huntingtown High School Hurricanes wrestling team was honored by the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners on April 10, 2025, for securing the 2025 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 2A State Championship. The team’s remarkable season, marked by a 29-5 record, showcased their dominance in Maryland’s competitive wrestling landscape. Senior wrestler Will Buckler was also recognized for his individual state championship at 157 pounds, capping an extraordinary high school career.

The Hurricanes’ path to the state title included several notable achievements. They claimed their eighth 2A South Regional Dual Championship and their fourth Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Championship. The team finished the season ranked sixth in the Washington metropolitan area, second among Maryland public schools, and first in the 1A/2A classification, according to the Maryland State Wrestling Association. Their success was attributed to disciplined training, strategic coaching, and strong team cohesion under the guidance of head coach Jacob Cramer.

Individual standout Will Buckler was a cornerstone of the team’s success. Buckler, who will continue his wrestling career at Frostburg State University, finished the 2024-25 season with a 24-1 record and a career varsity record of 132-31. His accolades this year included first-place finishes at the SMAC Championship and the 2A South Regional Championship, a second-place finish at the War on the Shore Tournament, and recognition as a National Prep All-American. Buckler also earned titles as a two-time WCAC Champion and a three-time MIS State Placer. “Will has demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and sportsmanship, proudly representing Huntingtown High,” the Calvert County Board of Education stated during the recognition ceremony.

The Board of Education praised the entire Hurricanes team for their commitment and sportsmanship. “The Calvert County Board of Education congratulates the Hurricanes’ athletes, coaches, and families on an incredible year,” the board said in a statement. “We commend their dedication, hard work, and sportsmanship, and we wish them continued success in the seasons to come.”

The Hurricanes’ state championship adds to Huntingtown High School’s growing reputation for athletic excellence. The team’s rigorous schedule, which included competitions against top programs in Maryland and beyond, prepared them for the high-stakes environment of the MPSSAA tournament. Their performance at the state level was particularly impressive given the depth of talent in the 2A classification, as noted by MaxPreps.

Buckler’s individual championship at 157 pounds was a highlight of the tournament. His near-perfect season record and ability to perform under pressure earned him widespread recognition. Frostburg State University, where Buckler will compete next, has a strong wrestling program that competes in the NCAA Division II Mountain East Conference.

The April 10 recognition ceremony, held during the Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) Board of Education meeting, celebrated both the team’s collective achievements and Buckler’s individual honors. Community members, school officials, and families gathered to applaud the wrestlers’ contributions to Calvert County’s pride.

The Huntingtown Hurricanes’ 2025 season sets a high standard for future teams. With several underclassmen expected to return, the program is poised for continued success. The Calvert County Board of Education expressed optimism about the team’s future, emphasizing the importance of athletics in fostering discipline and teamwork among students.
