FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team extended their winning streak to three games with an 8-6 road victory over the University of Mary Washington on April 16, 2025. The Seahawks (7-7) evened their season record, holding off a late fourth-quarter surge by the Eagles (10-4) in a tightly contested match between former Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rivals.

The game remained scoreless until the final four minutes of the first quarter when senior captain Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) broke the deadlock with a goal at 3:45, followed by an assist on the next score at 2:24, giving St. Mary’s a 2-0 lead. Mary Washington responded early in the second quarter with a goal from Tori Mueller at 45 seconds, but senior captain Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) restored the two-goal advantage with a score at 5:40, making it 3-1 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Abigail Fisher narrowed the gap to 3-2 for the Eagles at 8:18, but St. Mary’s answered with back-to-back goals from Horton and Betch, building a 5-2 lead with 13:58 remaining. Mary Washington’s Ava Windham scored an unassisted goal 56 seconds later, keeping the Eagles in contention. Sophomore Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex Academy) then pushed the Seahawks’ lead to 7-3, scoring twice within 102 seconds late in the fourth quarter.

Mary Washington mounted a late rally, outscoring St. Mary’s 3-1 in the final six minutes, including two goals in the last minute, with the final score coming at 13 seconds. However, the Seahawks held firm for the 8-6 win.

Mary Washington held a slight edge in shots (27-24) and had a +5 turnover margin (13-18). The Eagles also led 9-8 in draw controls, while ground balls were even at 19 apiece. St. Mary’s excelled in free-position shots, converting 2 of 3 attempts, compared to Mary Washington’s 1 of 4.

Elling led St. Mary’s with three goals, while Betch contributed two goals and an assist. Horton added two goals and shared the team lead in draw controls with four alongside sophomore defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson). Senior goalie Isabel Gautreaux (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) made a season-high 12 saves and collected four ground balls. Defenders Boudreau, Kayla Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), and Mira Broy (Parkton, Md./Hereford) each forced two turnovers.

For Mary Washington, Molly Daw recorded two goals and an assist, and Fisher scored twice. Goalkeeper Allison Carolan made eight saves and secured two ground balls, but the Eagles suffered their third consecutive loss.

The game highlighted St. Mary’s defensive resilience and offensive efficiency, as noted in NCAA Division III lacrosse trends where teams with strong goalkeeping and draw control. The Seahawks’ ability to capitalize on key moments secured their victory.

St. Mary’s next faces Bryn Athyn (7-3, 2-1 UEC) on April 19 at noon in Bryn Athyn, Pa., at Nelson Field, aiming to continue their momentum.
