RICHMOND, Va. — The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, staged a comeback to defeat the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, on April 20, 2025, at The Diamond. The victory capped a successful road series, with the Baysox winning four of six games against Richmond.

The Flying Squirrels (4-11) struck first in the second inning against Chesapeake starter Ryan Long. Zach Morgan’s single to right field scored the game’s first run, followed by Aeverson Arteaga’s fielder’s choice grounder to third, which drove in a second run. Long, a 25-year-old right-hander, settled in after the inning, allowing no further runs. He pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits, with one walk and three strikeouts, improving his record to 2-0. Long’s 2.63 ERA through three starts and 13.2 innings reflects his strong start to the 2025 season, as noted in the Eastern League’s player statistics.

Chesapeake (9-6) responded in the third inning against Richmond’s starting left-hander Seth Lonsway. Doug Hodo led off with a single, and Jeremiah Jackson doubled, setting the stage for the Baysox’s first runs in 21 innings after being shut out in their previous two games. Creed Willems grounded out to second, scoring Hodo, and Silas Ardoin’s sacrifice fly to center brought in Jackson, tying the score at 2-2.

The Baysox took the lead in the sixth against Richmond reliever Will Bednar, who took the loss (0-1). Willems doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Frederick Bencosme’s sacrifice fly to left field foul territory scored Willems, giving Chesapeake a 3-2 edge. The Eastern League’s game logs confirm the sequence, highlighting Willems’ key contribution with a double and a run scored.

Right-hander Levi Wells secured the victory, pitching four scoreless innings for his second save in two outings. Wells allowed three hits, issued no walks, and struck out four, maintaining a 1.59 ERA over 11.1 innings this season. His performance was critical in shutting down Richmond’s offense, which managed only three hits after Long’s departure.

The Baysox’s road success continued, improving to 6-3 away from home and 6-3 in one-run games. The team’s ability to win close contests has been a hallmark of their early season, as reported by the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league updates. Richmond, meanwhile, struggled to capitalize on early momentum, falling to 4-11 in the Eastern League standings.

The game, played at The Diamond, a historic venue hosting Double-A baseball since 1985, drew a modest crowd, typical for Sunday afternoon matchups in the league. The Baysox’s victory underscored their resilience, particularly after two consecutive shutout losses. The Eastern League’s official website notes that Chesapeake’s offense, while limited to three runs, capitalized on timely hitting and defensive stability.

The Baysox return to Prince George’s Stadium for their next series, while the Flying Squirrels continue their homestand. For more details on the Eastern League standings and player stats, visit www.milb.com/eastern-league.
