WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) launched its 250th anniversary celebration on April 28, 2025, honoring its legacy of continuous mail delivery since 1775 while unveiling a new Eagle in Flight symbol to mark the milestone. The agency, which predates the nation’s founding, plans a yearlong commemoration with stamps, events, and merchandise to highlight its role in connecting Americans through technological and cultural changes.

Acting U.S. Postmaster General Doug Tulino emphasized the Postal Service’s enduring impact. “The founders of our great nation saw the intrinsic need of postal services as the United States was born — even before the country itself was formed,” Tulino said. “The Postal Service remains a great organization connecting our nation and helping power our economy. We are proud to help set the stage for the 250th anniversary of the United States next year.”

The Eagle in Flight symbol, designed with Turner Duckworth, complements the iconic sonic eagle logo introduced in 1993. Featuring vibrant colors and dynamic wings, it honors USPS’s roots while symbolizing its future-focused mission. “The face of the Eagle in Flight honors the Postal Service’s roots while amplifying the notion of delivering into the future through the wings,” the agency stated. The symbol, not replacing the sonic eagle, will be used throughout 2025’s celebrations.

Since its establishment before telegraphs or telephones, USPS has evolved to serve a growing nation. The bald eagle, a symbol of strength and freedom, has adorned its seal since the 1970 Postal Reorganization Act. The new symbol builds on this legacy, reflecting confidence and purpose as USPS prepares for its next chapter. The agency’s 640,000 employees deliver to over 165 million addresses, powering economic activity and community ties.

USPS’s 250th anniversary will feature a range of initiatives:

  • Commemorative stamps celebrating the milestone.
  • A USPS-licensed coffee table book.
  • A 250th anniversary edition of “The United States Postal Service: An American History,” available in print and online.
  • Branded merchandise with the Eagle in Flight symbol.
  • A special “Mail with Mr. ZIP” YouTube episode focusing on the anniversary.
  • Advertising campaigns themed “Delivering since 1775.”
  • Social media, podcasts, and blog posts highlighting USPS’s history.
  • Additional events to be announced closer to the anniversary.

The celebrations align with the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, underscoring USPS’s role in fostering unity. “We look forward to continuing to serve the American public for another 250 years,” Tulino said, affirming the agency’s commitment to innovation and reliability. The Eagle in Flight symbol, with its vibrant design, embodies this forward-looking spirit while honoring a legacy that began before the Declaration of Independence.

USPS’s history includes milestones like the Pony Express and airmail, adapting to challenges from telegraphs to e-commerce. The anniversary events aim to engage the public, showcasing how USPS remains vital in a digital age. From rural routes to urban centers, the Postal Service’s universal network continues to strengthen bonds, as it has for two and a half centuries.
