LA PLATA, Md. — Demetrius Charles Dorsey, 23, of La Plata, was arrested on May 2, 2025, at 5 a.m., facing charges related to multiple ATV thefts across Maryland and Virginia, as well as possession with intent to distribute drugs. The thefts spanned King George County, Charles County, La Plata, Alexandria City, Prince William County, Prince George’s County, and St. Mary’s County, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
Dorsey allegedly targeted individuals selling ATVs on social media platforms. He would arrange to meet sellers, often in business parking lots, and request a test drive, only to flee with the vehicle and not return. The stolen ATVs were then resold online and through social media, creating a pattern of thefts across the region. Law enforcement agencies collaborated to investigate the series of incidents, leading to Dorsey’s arrest.
A search warrant executed at Dorsey’s residence on Goose Creek Drive yielded over 100 grams of cannabis and materials associated with drug distribution, further implicating him in illegal activities. Additionally, Dorsey has been linked to numerous complaints from residents and motorists about reckless driving, which created hazardous conditions on local roadways.
Authorities emphasized the importance of vigilance when selling vehicles online, offering specific recommendations to prevent similar crimes. Sellers are advised to check and photograph a buyer’s driver’s license, retain vehicle keys until payment or identification is secured, and clearly state in advertisements that test rides require full payment or a cash deposit with valid ID.
The investigation involved cooperation from law enforcement in Charles County, St. Mary’s County, Prince George’s County, Prince William County, Alexandria City, and King George County, highlighting the regional impact of Dorsey’s alleged activities. Detectives are continuing to investigate and are seeking additional information from the public. Anyone with details related to the case is urged to contact Detective Caldwell at 301-609-3907.
