ST. LEONARD, Md. – The Calvert County Department of Public Works will launch a sidewalk reconstruction project in the St. Leonard Town Center on May 5, 2025, weather permitting, to enhance pedestrian safety and improve walkability along St. Leonard Road. The initiative, part of ongoing efforts to upgrade local infrastructure, will involve significant construction work and temporary disruptions for motorists and pedestrians.

Construction will occur on both sides of St. Leonard Road, between Mattapany Road and Leonard Ave., Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The project includes removing trees between the sidewalk and curb, demolishing sidewalk sections displaced by tree roots, and installing new concrete sidewalks. These improvements aim to create a safer and more accessible pedestrian environment in the town center.

For public safety, a pedestrian detour will be implemented throughout the project. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and flagging operations during work hours. The Department of Public Works urges drivers and pedestrians to follow posted signs and exercise caution in the construction zone to ensure safety and minimize delays.

The Department of Public Works expressed gratitude for the patience of residents and visitors during the project. “This project is part of Calvert County’s ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure and enhance walkability in our town centers,” the department stated in its announcement. The initiative reflects the county’s commitment to fostering pedestrian-friendly spaces that support local businesses and community engagement in St. Leonard.

The sidewalk reconstruction is expected to address longstanding issues caused by tree roots, creating uneven and hazardous walking surfaces. By replacing damaged sections with new concrete, the project will improve accessibility for all pedestrians, including those with mobility challenges. Removing certain trees, while necessary for the sidewalk upgrades, will be conducted carefully to balance infrastructure needs with environmental considerations.

Calvert County has prioritized infrastructure improvements in recent years, focusing on enhancing its town centers’ safety and functionality. St. Leonard, a small but vibrant community, is a hub for residents and visitors. The sidewalk project is one of several efforts to modernize the area, following similar initiatives in other parts of the county to improve roads, sidewalks, and public facilities.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays during construction hours and consider alternate routes when possible. The pedestrian detour will guide walkers around the work zone, ensuring safe passage while construction is underway. The Department of Public Works will provide updates on the project’s progress and any changes to the schedule due to weather or other factors.
