INDIAN HEAD, Md. — A routine traffic stop on May 2, 2025, led to the arrest of Joseph Leon Young, 62, of Indian Head, after Charles County Sheriff’s Office patrol officers recovered crack cocaine and a replica firearm. The incident occurred at 9:06 p.m. in Route 210 and South Poplar Lane, with PFC Heishman leading the investigation.
During the stop, an officer observed Young attempting to remove what appeared to be crack cocaine from his pockets and conceal a handgun under his seat. Upon further inspection, officers recovered multiple baggies of crack cocaine, indicating intent to distribute. The handgun was identified as a replica pellet pistol, designed to resemble a real firearm closely. Additionally, the vehicle’s tags were not registered to the car and belonged to a different vehicle, prompting additional charges.
Young faces charges of possession with intent to distribute drugs and several motor vehicle violations, including improper registration. He was taken into custody and transported to the Charles County Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing. The Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the quantity of cocaine recovered or the specific motor vehicle violations, as the investigation remains ongoing.
The recovery of crack cocaine in baggies suggests an intent to distribute, a serious offense under Maryland law that carries significant penalties. The improper vehicle tags further complicate Young’s case, as such violations can indicate attempts to evade detection.
Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-2222. The investigation continues, and residents can stay updated through the Sheriff’s Office website or local news outlets. The case will proceed through the Charles County court system, with prosecutors likely focusing on the intent-to-distribute charge given the packaging of the cocaine.
