SOLOMONS, Md. — The Solomons Business Association is racing against a May 23, 2025, deadline to raise $8,000 to fund its annual 4th of July fireworks display, a cherished tradition that draws thousands to the island. Facing financial challenges, the association has launched a crowdfunding campaign to ensure the celebration continues.

“Every year, the Solomons 4th of July fireworks light up the sky and remind us of the pride, freedom, and unity that make our community truly special,” the association stated in a public appeal. “It’s more than just a show — it’s a tradition that brings us together under one sky to celebrate what it means to be American.” Without the funds, the event will be canceled, marking a break in a tradition that has defined Solomons’ Independence Day for decades.

The association’s GoFundMe campaign, accessible at Help Save Solomons Fireworks, urges residents and supporters to donate. “We know times are tough, but even a small donation can go a long way,” the appeal reads. Contributions of any size, from $5 to $500, are welcomed to meet the $8,000 goal. If unsuccessful, the association will have no choice but to cancel the 2025 display.

The fireworks, launched over the Patuxent River, typically cost over $90,000, funded primarily by Calvert County grants, local business donations, and community contributions. This year’s shortfall stems from reduced fundraising capacity, prompting the urgent call for support. The event, scheduled for July 4, 2025, at 9:15 p.m., is a highlight of a daylong celebration that includes a children’s bike parade, colonial reenactments, a boat parade, and live concerts.

Historically, Solomons has rallied to save its fireworks. In 2021, Lusby resident Kyle Webber spearheaded a similar effort when the association faced a $30,000 shortfall. His GoFundMe campaign raised over $11,000 in a week, supplemented by county funds, ensuring the show went on. Webber’s initiative, backed by the Calvert County Department of Economic Development and Commissioners, demonstrated the community’s commitment to the tradition.

The Solomons Business Association emphasizes the event’s role in fostering unity. “Thank you for being the heart of this community,” the association wrote. “Let’s make this 4th of July unforgettable — together.” Donations can be made via the GoFundMe page or by sending checks to SBA Fireworks, PO Box 724, Solomons, MD 20688. Donors will be acknowledged on the association’s website.

The 2025 celebration plans mirror past years, with events like the 1st Maryland Regiment Colonial Reenactors Encampment and a free Historical Adventure Quest for children. The fireworks, produced by Digital Lightning and launched from barge platforms, attract over 10,000 visitors annually, boosting local businesses. Parking at Glascock Field, priced at $5, will support Boy Scout Troop 451 and the fireworks fund.

Community members are encouraged to act quickly. “Let’s come together to keep this cherished tradition alive,” the association urged. The campaign’s success hinges on widespread participation to preserve Solomons’ Independence Day spirit.
