LEONARDTOWN, Md. — On May 1, 2025, the St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks (R&P) recognized volunteers for their contributions to programs, presenting certificates and awards at a board meeting. The event honored individuals from the Museums division, Summerstock theater program, and youth sports leagues for their nearly 9,000 hours of service in 2024.

Volunteers received certificates for their work in the Museums division, Summerstock theater, and as coaches in the youth indoor soccer and basketball leagues. Two coaches were singled out for exceptional sportsmanship. Dustin Robinson, who coached two youth basketball teams, received the annual George Stewart Coaches Award. Kevin Meyer was presented with the First Year Coaches Award for his debut season as a volunteer coach.

“It’s definitely a labor of love,” said Julia Pappendick, a Summerstock volunteer recognized for her costume work. “I started with my teenager when she was part of Summerstock, but I’ve kept going. It’s been a great experience.” Pappendick’s commitment reflects the dedication of volunteers who ensure R&P programs run smoothly.

“Any amount of effort that someone wants to put in, you get to say you’re part of it,” said Christina Allee, another Summerstock volunteer. Their contributions support R&P’s mission to deliver high-quality programs and events to the community.

In 2024, R&P volunteers collectively provided nearly 9,000 hours of service, aiding facilities, events, and programs like youth sports and theater productions. The department relies on volunteers to maintain its offerings, which include summer camps, community events, and museum operations. The recognition event underscored the critical role volunteers play in enhancing local recreation opportunities.

Those interested in volunteering can apply online through the department’s application portal at Volunteer Application. A complete list of recognized volunteers is available at R&P Volunteer Recognition.

The annual recognition event, held at the R&P board meeting, highlights the department’s appreciation for its volunteers. The George Stewart Coaches Award, named for a longtime supporter of youth sports, honors coaches who exemplify sportsmanship and leadership. The First Year Coaches Award encourages new volunteers to continue their service.

R&P’s programs serve thousands of residents annually, from youth athletes to theater enthusiasts. Volunteers like Robinson and Meyer help maintain the quality of these offerings, coaching hundreds of children in basketball and soccer. Summerstock volunteers, including Pappendick and Allee, contribute to productions that draw community audiences, providing costumes, set design, and other support.

The Museums division relies on volunteers to preserve and share St. Mary’s County’s history, offering educational programs and tours. These efforts ensure that R&P’s facilities, such as local museums and community centers, remain accessible and engaging for residents and visitors.

The department encourages community members to get involved, noting that volunteering offers opportunities to build skills and connect with others. With a range of programs needing support, R&P welcomes contributions of any scale to sustain its mission of fostering community engagement through recreation and cultural activities.
