LA PLATA, Md. — On May 31, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., Christ Church in La Plata will present a unique musical event featuring a father-son duo, Dr. Osman Kivrak on viola and Andrew Kivrak on organ, piano, and viola. The concert, held in the historic church, will include the world premiere of “Oliver’s Journey for Viola and Organ,” a new work by American composer Rob Vuono, Jr., commissioned by Dr. Kivrak, director of the Charles County Youth Orchestra.
The program will also feature a diverse selection of pieces: “Poem for Viola and Organ” by Leo Sowerby, a neo-romantic work; “Sonata in G Minor for Viola and Piano” by 18th-century composer Henry Eccles; “Duet for Two Violas in G Major” by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach; and “Toccata,” a late 19th-century organ masterpiece by Charles-Marie Widor. The concert is free, with donations welcomed to support Christ Church’s musical activities.

Reverend Dr. Kate Heichler highlighted the venue’s appeal, noting that Christ Church boasts “what many organists consider to be the best organ in the region, as well as wonderful acoustics and beautiful stained-glass windows.” The church’s exceptional setting enhances its reputation as a hub for live music in Charles County.
The world premiere of “Oliver’s Journey” is a significant moment for composer Rob Vuono, Jr., who expressed gratitude for the opportunity. He described the honor of having his work performed by Dr. Kivrak and Andrew Kivrak, whom he called “two world-class and highly respected musicians,” in the historic Christ Church.
Christ Church has been a steadfast supporter of the Charles County Youth Orchestra since 2019, hosting events such as concerto competitions, chamber music performances, and auditions. Dr. Kivrak emphasized the concert’s role as a fundraiser and a gesture of appreciation for the church’s contributions to the orchestra and community. He extended thanks to Reverend Dr. Heichler and the church for their ongoing support.
Charles County Commissioner President Collins plans to attend, with his office stating he is “honored to join you in recognizing such an important cultural occasion for our community.” He anticipates experiencing the premiere and celebrating the church’s musical heritage.
The concert underscores Christ Church’s role as a cultural cornerstone in La Plata, fostering both traditional and contemporary music. The Charles County Youth Orchestra benefits from the church’s facilities, which enable young musicians to develop their talents through various programs. Donations collected during the concert will further these efforts, supporting musical activities at the church and in the community.
This event promises an evening of exceptional music in a historic setting, celebrating both the rich heritage of Christ Church and the innovative spirit of new compositions. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating in the acoustically renowned venue.
