LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Four members of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office were recognized for their academic achievements in 2024 and 2025, showcasing their commitment to lifelong learning and professional excellence. Cpl. Jaime Davis, Lt. Eva Jones, Lt. Dale Smith, and Sgt. Anthony Whipkey earned advanced degrees, enhancing their skills and strengthening the agency’s operations. Their accomplishments align with graduation week celebrations honoring the Class of 2025.

Cpl. Jaime Davis graduated from the College of Southern Maryland on May 9, 2025, with an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. She is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland Global Campus. “I’m committed to professional growth—and to showing my son that it’s never too late to improve yourself,” Davis said. She credited the county’s tuition reimbursement program for supporting her education.

Lt. Eva Jones, Assistant Commander of the Special Operations Division, earned a Master of Science in Emergency Services Management from Columbia Southern University in October 2024. Her studies focused on leading multi-agency responses during large-scale events and emergencies, sharpening her leadership in high-stakes situations.

Lt. Dale Smith completed a Juris Master’s degree from Liberty University in December 2024. The graduate law program deepened his understanding of court rulings, contracts, and administrative law. “I look forward to sharing this knowledge to strengthen our agency’s operations,” Smith said.

Sgt. Anthony Whipkey graduated Summa Cum Laude from Central State University in August 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. His educational journey began in 2001 but was paused for military service, including a deployment to Iraq. Two decades later, he completed his degree, enhancing his knowledge of the law and preparing for expanded responsibilities.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office supports continued education through benefits like tuition reimbursement and a student loan repayment assistance program. These initiatives enable deputies to pursue higher education while serving the community. The agency highlighted the graduates’ determination as an inspiration during graduation week, extending congratulations to the Class of 2025.

Davis, Jones, Smith, and Whipkey balance demanding roles with academic rigor, exemplifying the sheriff’s office’s commitment to professionalism. Their degrees enhance their ability to serve St. Mary’s County, from interpreting legal frameworks to managing emergency responses. The sheriff’s office employs over 200 personnel, and its focus on education strengthens community trust and operational effectiveness.

The tuition reimbursement program, available to county employees, covers eligible coursework, encouraging professional development. The student loan repayment assistance program further supports deputies pursuing advanced education. These benefits reflect the agency’s investment in its personnel and the community.

As St. Mary’s County celebrates its graduates, the sheriff’s office commended Davis, Jones, Smith, and Whipkey for their dedication. Their achievements underscore the value of lifelong learning in law enforcement, inspiring both colleagues and the Class of 2025 to pursue excellence.
