PHOENIX, Ariz., June 1, 2025 — The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Washington Nationals 3-1 at Chase Field on Sunday, improving their record to 28-31. The Nationals, also 28-31, fell short despite a late rally, as Arizona’s pitching and early offense secured the victory.

The Diamondbacks struck in the first inning against Nationals starter Mitchell Parker. Ketel Marte singled, followed by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s RBI double, scoring Marte. Eugenio Suárez then hit a two-run homer, giving Arizona a 3-0 lead. The Nationals answered in the fifth when CJ Abrams scored on Nathaniel Lowe’s single, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, Washington struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-8 and leaving eight runners on base.

Arizona’s bullpen was key in preserving the lead. Cristian Mena earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings, while Justin Martinez secured his fourth save with a perfect ninth. Parker took the loss for Washington, allowing three runs on three hits over five innings. The sports card above details the game’s key moments and player performances, including Suárez’s homer and Lowe’s RBI single.

“We got the big hits early and our pitchers did the rest,” said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. Arizona’s offense was limited to three hits, but their timely scoring proved sufficient. Washington’s offense showed flashes, with Robert Hassell III and Daylen Lile each doubling, but they couldn’t capitalize on opportunities.

The game saw an injury concern when Arizona starter Corbin Burnes exited in the fifth with right elbow tightness after allowing one run on four hits. Jalen Beeks and Mena bridged the gap to the late innings, where Shelby Miller and Martinez shut down the Nationals. Washington’s defense faltered with a throwing error by José Tena, but Arizona’s clean fielding ensured no miscues.

Played before 29,664 fans under a closed roof, the game lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes. Both teams are hovering around .500, with Arizona in fourth in the NL West and Washington third in the NL East. The loss marked the Nationals’ second in three games, while the Diamondbacks continued their push for a wild-card spot.
