BALTIMORE — Maryland’s six privately owned casinos generated $176,447,080 in gaming revenue from slot machines and table games in May 2025, marking the state’s seventh-best month on record. The total reflects a $3,294,119 (1.9%) increase from May 2024, driven by strong performances at MGM National Harbor, Horseshoe Casino, Hollywood Casino, and Ocean Downs Casino.
The casinos contributed $76,105,267 to the state, up $1,656,020 (2.2%) from May 2024. Of this, $54,867,340 went to the Education Trust Fund, a $1,204,012 (2.2%) increase from the previous year. Additional funds supported local communities, Maryland’s horse racing industry, and small, minority-, and women-owned businesses.
MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County led with $75,372,227 in revenue, a 4.3% increase ($3,104,752) from May 2024. Operating 2,273 slot machines and 211 table games, it accounted for nearly 43% of the state’s total. Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County, with 3,837 slot machines and 179 table games, generated $63,852,257, down 1.8% ($1,180,633) from last year. Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore City reported $15,223,445, a 3.4% increase ($500,435) with 1,361 slot machines and 115 table games.
Smaller casinos also saw gains. Hollywood Casino in Cecil County, with 735 slot machines and 23 table games, posted $8,303,655, up 6.4% ($496,700). Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County, operating 890 slot machines and 19 table games, earned $8,766,177, a 5.0% increase ($414,309). Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County, with 638 slot machines and 12 table games, recorded $4,929,318, down 0.8% ($41,445) from May 2024.
The revenue growth reflects Maryland’s robust casino industry, which has generated over $18 billion since 2010. Hollywood Casino Perryville opened first in September 2010, followed by others, with MGM National Harbor as the most recent in December 2016. The industry’s contributions to education, local jurisdictions, and horse racing remain significant, with fiscal year 2025 (July 2024–May 2025) showing a 1.2% revenue increase compared to the prior year.
Despite the strong May performance, individual casino results varied. MGM’s consistent growth underscores its dominance, while Live! Casino’s slight decline may reflect market fluctuations. Horseshoe’s rebound from prior losses signals resilience, particularly after investments like the Topgolf attraction. Smaller venues like Hollywood and Ocean Downs showed steady demand, while Rocky Gap’s minor dip aligns with its smaller scale.
Maryland’s casino sector continues to support economic development, with detailed revenue and contribution data available online. The state’s gaming revenue does not include sports betting, which operates separately since its legalization in December 2021. As the industry evolves, Maryland’s casinos remain a key economic driver, balancing entertainment with community benefits.
