CALIFORNIA, Md., June 12, 2025 — A house fire at 45700 block of Oliver Court in California, St. Mary’s County, caused $150,000 in damages to a single-story home on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. The accidental blaze, which started in the kitchen/dining room area, displaced the family of homeowner Zachary Moore. No injuries were reported, and a neighbor rescued one dog from the home.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor who heard smoke alarms sounding. The occupants were not home at the time. Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) responded with 20 firefighters and controlled the fire within 20 minutes. The single-alarm fire caused an estimated $100,000 in structural damage and $50,000 in content loss. Smoke alarms were present and activated, and there were no fire alarms or sprinklers in the home.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. The neighbor’s quick action in rescuing the dog ensured no loss of life. The preliminary cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, with the area of origin identified as the kitchen/dining room. No arrests were made, and the investigation remains ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.

The Bay District VFD’s rapid response limited the fire’s spread, preventing further damage to the property and neighboring homes. The department deployed one alarm, with firefighters working efficiently to extinguish the blaze. The home, a single-family residence, sustained significant damage but remains structurally intact.
