WALDORF, Md. — The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs swept a doubleheader against the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars on July 2, 2025, at Regency Furniture Stadium, winning Game 1 by a score of 2-0 and Game 2 by a score of 5-4 in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs. The victories improved the Blue Crabs’ record to 33-26, while the Flying Boxcars fell to 14-45. A scheduled game on July 1 was canceled due to storms.

In Game 1, starting at 5:04 p.m., Blue Crabs pitcher Shawn Semple delivered a complete-game shutout, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out eight over seven innings. Hagerstown’s Mike Kickham took the loss, yielding two runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings. The Blue Crabs scored in the first inning when Jackson Loftin singled, advanced on Dondrei Hubbard’s single, and scored on Brett Barrera’s single. In the second, Sam Dexter hit a solo home run, securing the 2-0 lead. Hagerstown managed singles from Blake Mayberry and Roidel Martinez but left three runners on base.

Game 2, starting at 7:31 p.m. with 1,437 fans in attendance, saw the Blue Crabs edge out a 5-4 win. Southern Maryland’s Andrew Thurman earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings, while Andre Scrubb secured the save. Hagerstown’s Jack Weisenburger took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in five innings. The Blue Crabs erupted for five runs in the second inning, driven by Pearce Howard’s RBI single, Zach Racusin’s RBI single, and Jackson Loftin’s three-run homer. Hagerstown responded with one run in the third on Tyler Williams’ fielder’s choice and three in the fourth, powered by Justin Acal’s two-run triple and Martinez’s RBI groundout, but fell short.

The Blue Crabs’ performance showcased their offensive depth, with Loftin going 4-for-5 across both games, including a double, a homer, and three RBIs. Barrera and Giovanni Digiacomo also contributed multiple hits.

The Atlantic League, an independent professional baseball league, features high-level competition with players often having MLB or MiLB experience. Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Blue Crabs, provides a family-friendly atmosphere for Southern Maryland fans. The doubleheader’s quick pace—1:46 for Game 1 and 2:05 for Game 2—kept fans engaged under sunny and partly cloudy conditions, with temperatures of 85 and 79 degrees, respectively.

Hagerstown struggled offensively, batting .182 (4-for-22) with runners on base across both games. Southern Maryland’s pitching staff, led by Semple and Scrubb, limited the Flying Boxcars to nine hits total. The Blue Crabs’ defense was error-free, turning a double play in Game 1 and executing key putouts.

The sweep strengthens Southern Maryland’s position in the Atlantic League’s North Division, while Hagerstown continues to seek consistency.
