St. Mary’s College of Maryland achieved a historic 92nd-place finish in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors’ Cup, climbing six spots from its 2023-24 ranking. The Seahawks earned a program-record 221 points, the highest in school history, and outperformed all United East Conference peers for the third consecutive year. This milestone underscores the strength of St. Mary’s College Directors’ Cup performance in NCAA Division III athletics.

Record-Breaking Season

The St. Mary’s College Directors’ Cup ranking reflects contributions from eight NCAA Championship-qualifying teams. In the fall, the Seahawks earned 75 points, placing 73rd, with women’s rowing finishing seventh for 20 points, field hockey and men’s lacrosse both 17th for 25 and 50 points, respectively, and men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and women’s lacrosse each 33rd for 25 points. The winter season added 51 points, primarily from men’s swimming’s 23rd-place finish, led by Luke Schwenk’s national title in the 50-freestyle.

Standout Performances

Luke Schwenk ’25 was a key contributor to the St. Mary’s College Directors’ Cup total, winning the NCAA Division III 50-freestyle championship and placing ninth in the 100-freestyle and 10th in the 100-backstroke, earning 51 points for men’s swimming. Women’s rowing secured seventh place nationally, while men’s lacrosse contributed the highest single-sport total with 50 points for its 17th-place finish. These results highlight the program’s depth across multiple sports.

United East Conference Dominance

For the third straight year, St. Mary’s led the United East Conference in the St. Mary’s College Directors’ Cup standings, surpassing all member schools in both placement and points. “The combined efforts of our outstanding coaches, student-athletes, and support staff continue to prove that St. Mary’s College, along with our United East Conference peers, belong at and can compete on the national stage,” said Director of Athletics & Recreation Crystal Gibson.

Directors’ Cup Framework

The Learfield Directors’ Cup, established by NACDA and USA Today, awards points based on NCAA Championship finishes, with 18 sports counted, including mandatory men’s and women’s soccer and basketball. St. Mary’s has appeared in 18 of the 30 Division III standings since 1995-96, with the 2024-25 season marking its best performance. The previous high was 207 points and a 98th-place finish in 2023-24.
