On July 15, 2025, at approximately 2:43 p.m., a fatal crash on Maryland’s United States Route 301 south of Maryland Route 257 in Newburg left one person dead. Maryland State Police (MSP) from the La Plata Barrack, alongside Charles County Sheriff Deputies, responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision. The incident prompted the involvement of a Collision Reconstruction Specialist, TFC A. Sabock, who led the investigation, supported by the MSP Crash Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED).

According to the MSP La Plata Barrack and Crash Team, a Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer, operated by Otis Coates, 55, of College Park, Maryland, was stopped in northbound traffic on Route 301 at a traffic signal. A Subaru Legacy, driven by Andrew Ring, 26, of Chester, Maryland, approached from behind. For reasons still under investigation, Ring did not slow or stop, resulting in a rear-end collision with the trailer. The impact was severe, and Ring was pronounced deceased at the scene. Coates was unharmed, and no other injuries were reported.

The fatal crash in Maryland has drawn attention to traffic safety on busy routes like US 301, a major thoroughfare in Charles County. Authorities are working to determine why the Subaru failed to stop, with factors such as speed, distraction, or mechanical issues being considered. The MSP Crash Team is conducting a detailed analysis, including vehicle inspections and scene reconstruction, to piece together the events leading to the collision.

TFC A. Sabock is leading the investigation, identified as case 25-MSP-022721. Maryland State Police are seeking witnesses who may have observed the fatal crash on Maryland Route 301. Anyone with information is urged to contact TFC Sabock at (301) 392-1200 or via email at ashley.sabock@maryland.gov. Statements from the public could provide critical details to clarify the circumstances of the collision. The investigation remains active, with no preliminary findings yet released regarding potential charges or contributing factors.
