Tyrand Dupres Butler

WALDORF — Charles County narcotics detectives arrested Tyrand Dupres Butler on May 29 in connection with a drug distribution investigation.

Detectives assigned to the Narcotics Enforcement Section obtained search warrants for Butler’s residence in the 12000 block of Bar Oak Drive and for his 2019 Maserati Levante. The warrants followed an investigation into suspected drug distribution. Detectives took Butler into custody as he walked away from his vehicle at a Waldorf shopping center.

After the arrest, detectives served the search warrant at the residence and recovered nearly $25,000 worth of cocaine, drug packaging equipment and a stolen Glock 9mm handgun. Butler is prohibited from possessing firearms because of a prior felony conviction. He was transported to the Charles County Detention Center and charged with possession with intent to distribute narcotics and weapon violations.

On June 1, the court ordered Butler released from the detention center provided he meets the criteria for electronic monitoring.

Maryland law treats possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance as a felony. Penalties can include significant prison time and fines depending on the quantity and circumstances. Firearm possession by a person previously convicted of a felony is also a separate felony offense under state law.

The investigation began with detectives developing information about suspected drug distribution activities. Search warrants require a judicial finding of probable cause based on that information. Detectives executed the warrants after taking Butler into custody at the shopping center location.

The recovered cocaine and packaging materials formed the basis for the distribution-related charges. The stolen handgun added the weapons violations. Detectives continue to investigate the case, which remains active.

Butler’s initial court appearance resulted in the release order with electronic monitoring conditions. Electronic monitoring allows pretrial release while requiring the individual to remain at an approved residence and comply with location restrictions enforced by an ankle bracelet or similar device.

The charges represent allegations filed by law enforcement. Butler is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The case will proceed through the Charles County court system.

Local narcotics enforcement efforts in Charles County focus on disrupting drug distribution networks that can affect communities in Waldorf and surrounding areas. Investigations of this type often involve surveillance, confidential sources and analysis of drug trafficking patterns.
