HUNTINGTOWN, MD – The Calvert County Department of Public Works announced a Cox Road speed limit change near Tidewater School in Huntingtown, effective Monday, August 18, 2025. The posted speed limit on Cox Road will decrease from 30 mph to 25 mph to improve pedestrian safety. During posted school hours, the school zone speed limit will be further reduced to 20 mph. These changes aim to protect students, staff, and pedestrians in the vicinity of Tidewater School.
Focus on Pedestrian Safety

The Cox Road speed limit reduction reflects Calvert County’s commitment to enhancing safety in school zones. Tidewater School, located in Huntingtown, serves a significant number of students, and the surrounding area sees increased pedestrian activity during school hours. The Calvert County Department of Public Works, in collaboration with the Calvert County Traffic Safety Council, identified Cox Road as a priority for safety improvements due to its proximity to the school and potential for pedestrian-vehicle conflicts.
To ensure drivers are aware of the Cox Road speed limit change, electronic message signs will be temporarily placed in the area starting August 18, 2025. These signs will alert motorists to the new 25 mph limit and the 20 mph school zone limit during designated hours.
Calvert County’s Safety Initiatives
The Cox Road speed limit adjustment aligns with the Calvert County Strategic Roadway Safety Plan (2023-2025), which aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on county roadways. Developed by the Calvert County Traffic Safety Council, the plan uses crash and citation data to implement targeted safety measures, particularly in high-risk areas like school zones. The council includes experts in planning, enforcement, engineering, and community resources, working together to promote a safe systems approach.
Calvert County also employs automated speed cameras in school zones, including at Huntingtown Elementary and other schools, to enforce posted speed limits. These cameras, managed by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, issue $40 fines for violations exceeding 12 mp over the posted limit, enhancing enforcement efforts.
