Denny Hamlin clinched his second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory at Dover Motor Speedway’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 on July 20, 2025, overcoming a 56-minute rain delay and two overtime restarts to secure his 58th career win and fourth of the 2025 season. Driving the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, Hamlin held off teammate Chase Briscoe by 0.310 seconds in a dramatic finish, becoming the 13th driver to win consecutive NASCAR Cup Series races at the Monster Mile.
“It was a tough battle,” said Hamlin, who led 67 laps. “I had to endure a few restarts there. Those guys gave me a run for it. Winning here in Dover is super special to me. To go back-to-back here is amazing.” The race, extended to 407 laps due to overtime, saw Hamlin navigate challenging conditions, including contact with Briscoe’s No. 19 Toyota on the final lap, to claim the NASCAR Cup Series trophy.

The NASCAR Cup Series event featured eight cautions over 50 laps and 13 lead changes among 10 drivers. Chase Elliott dominated early, leading 238 laps and winning Stage 1, but a pit stop cycle allowed Hamlin to take the lead with 60 laps remaining. A red flag for rain with 15 laps to go tested strategies, with Briscoe’s fresher tires posing a threat. “I thought I had him there for a second,” said Briscoe, who finished second. “I was so close to clearing him.”
Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson took third and fourth, respectively, while Ty Gibbs rounded out the top five, advancing to the NASCAR Cup Series In-Season Challenge finale against Ty Dillon at Indianapolis. Dillon, finishing 20th, edged out John Hunter Nemechek to secure his spot in the $1 million showdown. “It feels good,” said Dillon. “I have been the underdog for a long time now.”
Elliott’s sixth-place finish gave him a 17-point NASCAR Cup Series championship lead over William Byron, who crashed late and finished 31st. Bubba Wallace’s seventh-place run maintained his 16-point edge over Ryan Preece for the final playoff spot, with Kyle Busch 39 points back after finishing 11th. The NASCAR Cup Series race tightened the playoff race with five regular-season events remaining.
The NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover, the 107th Cup event at the one-mile concrete oval, faced a 56-minute rain delay, disrupting strategies. Hamlin’s experience shone through, as he managed older tires against Briscoe’s fresher set. Team owner Joe Gibbs praised Hamlin, saying, “Denny is just after it. He’s leading the way in so many different ways.” The race, averaging 110.849 mph, showcased the physical demands of Dover’s high-banked track.
The NASCAR Cup Series now heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400 on July 27, 2025, with Kyle Larson as the defending champion.
