A third suspect has been arrested in connection with a violent shooting in Great Mills that left three men injured. On August 1, 2025, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s deputies took Jayshawn Maurice Bartlett, 21, of Lexington Park, into custody on a District Court warrant charging him with 25 counts related to the May 3 Great Mills shooting. The incident, which unfolded near Chancellors Run Road and Pegg Road, has kept the Southern Maryland community on edge.

In the early morning hours of May 3, deputies on proactive patrol heard gunfire and swiftly responded to the scene. They found a vehicle with four male occupants, three of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. Two victims were airlifted to a hospital for treatment, while the third declined medical care. The fourth occupant was unharmed. Detectives determined the Great Mills shooting stemmed from an altercation the previous evening, prompting a thorough investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

On May 6, two suspects, Cameron David Louis Curtis, 22, of Valley Lee, and Peyton James Robert Curtis, 20, of Callaway, were arrested for their roles in the Great Mills shooting. Both remain in custody at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, awaiting trial. Continued investigative efforts led detectives to identify Bartlett as an additional suspect. A warrant was issued, and he was apprehended without incident on August 1.

Bartlett faces a litany of charges tied to the Great Mills shooting, including four counts each of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. He is also charged with firearm use in a violent crime, handgun possession (on person and in vehicle, including loaded handguns), and four counts of recklessly discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle. Bartlett was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he awaits a bond hearing.

The Great Mills shooting has heightened local concerns about gun violence, with St. Mary’s County residents looking to the Sheriff’s Office for answers. The investigation remains active, and authorities are seeking additional information from the public.
