PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County officials recognized Huntingtown High School’s championship-winning athletic teams during meetings in early August 2025, honoring their state titles in baseball, softball and wrestling. The Board of County Commissioners presented citations to the boys varsity baseball, girls varsity softball and boys varsity wrestling squads on Aug. 5, while the Board of Education commended the baseball and softball teams two days later.
The Huntingtown High School championships marked a standout year for the Hurricanes, with three teams securing Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association titles. The baseball team claimed the MPSSAA Class 2A state crown with a 1-0 victory over Parkside on May 24 at Prince George’s Stadium, finishing 22-3 overall. They also won the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference championship and the 2A South Regional title, competing against 46 high schools statewide. Head coach Guy Smith led the squad, assisted by Nate Orlandi, Corey Wargo, Bobby Kessler, Ian Schwalenberg, Nick Gardner and Ryan Laur. This was the program’s second state title in school history.

The softball team matched the baseball record at 22-3, capturing the MPSSAA Class 2A state championship with a win over Stephen Decatur on May 23 at the University of Maryland Softball Complex. They earned the 2A South Regional championship en route to their sixth state title overall. Head coach Mike Johnson guided the team, with assistants Johnny Greever, Jen Howell and Danielle Kirchhofer.
The wrestling team rounded out the Huntingtown High School championships by winning the MPSSAA 2A state duals title, their eighth 2A South Regional Dual Championship and fourth SMAC crown, posting a 29-5 record. The event occurred in March at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.
At the Aug. 5 commissioners meeting, the board highlighted the teams’ athletic accomplishments and presented citations to players and coaches. “Congratulations for all of your athletic accomplishments!” the county government stated in a social media post.
The Board of Education followed on Aug. 7, focusing on the baseball and softball squads during its regular session. Members commended athletes, coaches and families for dedication, sportsmanship and achievements, noting the dual titles represented an extraordinary period for Huntingtown High School athletics.
The Hurricanes compete in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, which includes 12 schools across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. SMAC oversees sports like baseball, softball and wrestling, with championships determined through regular-season play and tournaments.
The 2025 MPSSAA baseball state finals featured four classes, with Huntingtown prevailing in 2A after regional victories. Softball followed a similar structure, culminating at the University of Maryland. Wrestling states involved individual and dual competitions, with Huntingtown excelling in the dual format.
Local officials often recognize student achievements through proclamations and citations, as seen in similar honors for other county teams in past years. The Aug. 5 event at the commissioners’ chambers in Prince Frederick drew team members, families and supporters.
These Huntingtown High School championships highlight the dedication required for state-level success, from rigorous practices to postseason play. Officials expressed pride in the teams’ representations of Calvert County values.
