BOWIE, Md. — The Chesapeake Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-0 on August 20, 2025, at Prince George’s Stadium, combining strong pitching and timely hitting to secure the win in the Eastern League contest.

Four Chesapeake Baysox pitchers collaborated on a six-hit shutout, limiting the Flying Squirrels to no runs while striking out five batters. Zach Fruit started and threw 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and no runs with four strikeouts. Daniel Lloyd earned the win, improving to 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA, after pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one hit. Ryan Long and Carter Rustad followed from the bullpen, with Long tossing one inning and Rustad handling the final two, allowing a combined one hit and striking out one. The Chesapeake Baysox defense supported the effort, though errors by second baseman Andrew Velasquez and reliever Trey Villers did not lead to runs.

Offensively, the Chesapeake Baysox scored all six runs on 10 hits, capitalizing on key moments. In the bottom of the second inning, Max Wagner singled to right field, driving in Reed Trimble for the first run. The fourth inning saw Douglas Hodo III double sharply to center, scoring Ethan Anderson and Trimble to make it 3-0. Enrique Bradfield Jr. then singled to center, bringing home Hodo for a 4-0 lead. The Chesapeake Baysox added two more in the eighth when Creed Willems doubled to center, scoring Bradfield Jr. and Carter Young.

Bradfield Jr., the Chesapeake Baysox center fielder, contributed significantly with a 3-for-3 performance, including two walks, an RBI, and a run scored. He also stole two bases, marking his 22nd and 23rd of the season. Hodo went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run. Willems finished 5-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Wagner added a 3-for-3 line with an RBI and a walk. The Chesapeake Baysox left 14 runners on base but went 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

On the mound for the Flying Squirrels, John Michael Bertrand took the loss, dropping to 5-9 with a 2.98 ERA after allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings. Relievers Cameron Choate, Trey Villers, and Ethan Hecht followed, with Choate pitching two innings and allowing no runs, Villers giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning, and Hecht tossing two-thirds of an inning without runs.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels managed six hits, including doubles from Andrew Croes (two), Bo Davidson, Carter Howell, and Andrew Velasquez. However, they struggled in clutch situations, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine on base. Velasquez stole his 17th base of the season.

This victory improved the Chesapeake Baysox record to 48-66 overall, placing them fifth in the Eastern League Southwest Division. The Richmond Flying Squirrels fell to 44-69, sixth in the same division. The Eastern League, a Double-A circuit, features 12 teams split into Northeast and Southwest divisions, with the Chesapeake Baysox serving as the affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and the Flying Squirrels aligned with the San Francisco Giants.

Enrique Bradfield Jr., a first-round draft pick by the Orioles in 2023 from Vanderbilt University, has been a standout for the Chesapeake Baysox, known for his elite speed and defensive prowess in center field. He has reached base in his last 13 games and stolen 23 bases this season. Creed Willems, an eighth-round pick in 2021 from Aledo High School in Texas, has shown power potential, hitting .254 with 19 doubles and contributing as a designated hitter and catcher. Douglas Hodo III, selected in the sixth round of the 2022 draft from the University of Texas, brings strong on-base skills, batting .202 with 16 doubles. Max Wagner, a second-round pick in 2022 from Clemson University, has battled injuries but displayed power earlier in his career.

Daniel Lloyd, the winning pitcher, is a 14th-round selection from 2021 out of the University of South Carolina, where he developed as a reliever with a focus on command. The Chesapeake Baysox pitching staff has emphasized shutout efforts this season, with this being their latest combined no-run performance.
