ST. LEONARD, MD — Commissioners Buddy Hance and Todd Ireland joined the Calvert County Department of Economic Development for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 19, 2025, at 11 a.m. to mark the revitalization of Buehler’s Marketplace at 4905 St. Leonard Rd in St. Leonard.

The event recognized the family-owned business’s refreshed space, which combines a local history museum with a vendor-based gift shop. The marketplace continues its tradition of community support while incorporating new elements to highlight St. Leonard and Calvert County heritage.

Buehler’s Marketplace features an on-site museum with a growing collection of artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia that document the area’s past. Displays include personal items and vintage photos that bring local stories to life, preserving the history of this small Southern Maryland community along Maryland Routes 2/4.

The gift shop portion hosts products from more than 75 local creators, makers, and small businesses. Shoppers find items such as baked goods, Amish jams and jellies, handmade crafts, seasonal décor, collectibles, books by local authors, and nostalgic pieces themed around St. Leonard.

The business emphasizes support for local entrepreneurship, historical preservation, and a welcoming environment for residents and visitors. It operates daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., providing a year-round venue for discovering Southern Maryland craftsmanship and history.

The ribbon cutting aligns with Calvert County’s efforts to promote small businesses through the Department of Economic Development. The department assists with such ceremonies, offering resources like press release guidance and coordination with local media and the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce. These events spotlight new or revitalized ventures that contribute to the local economy.

The revitalization follows the business’s earlier phases, with mentions of its museum and vendor focus appearing in county listings and local updates. For instance, the Calvert County tourism website lists Buehler’s Marketplace under specialty shops, describing it as celebrating St. Leonard’s past and present through local history and creations. Similar multi-vendor and antique-focused venues in the county, such as nearby Chesapeake Marketplace, contribute to a regional draw for unique shopping.

This recognition highlights the value of preserving community landmarks while adapting to modern retail. The marketplace’s blend of museum and vendor spaces offers educational and economic benefits, allowing visitors to learn about local history while supporting artisans. Such initiatives strengthen Southern Maryland’s small-business landscape, where family-operated ventures have long played key roles in towns like St. Leonard.

Residents and visitors can explore the marketplace directly at its address or through its online presence for current hours and offerings. The Calvert County Department of Economic Development continues to support similar projects that enhance local commerce and heritage.
