The Calvert County Board of Education has appointed Dr. Marcus J. Newsome as the permanent Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS), making official his leadership role following a successful stint as interim superintendent.

The unanimous vote occurred during the board’s meeting on February 12, 2026, in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Dr. Newsome’s four-year term begins July 1, 2026, and runs through June 30, 2030. He assumed the interim position for the 2025-2026 school year, guiding the district through transition after the previous superintendent’s departure.

Board President Jana Smith-Post praised Dr. Newsome’s performance, stating, “Dr. Newsome’s extensive experience, calm and steady leadership, professionalism and community engagement have earned the respect of our education community.” She added, “He has been embraced by educators, families, and stakeholders alike, and we are confident he is the right leader to guide our schools into the future.”

Dr. Newsome responded to the appointment with appreciation for the community, saying, “It is an honor to serve the Calvert County community. I believe every decision must be made in the best interest of students, and I look forward to working alongside our educators, families, and community partners to build an even stronger future for Calvert County Public Schools.”

An award-winning educator with decades of executive experience, Dr. Newsome has led school systems through academic improvements and organizational changes. His work emphasizes digital learning advancement, leadership development, and instructional excellence. National publications have featured his leadership, and he received recognition at White House ceremonies. He has mentored superintendents nationwide, and his contributions appear in the documentary “Petersburg Rising.”

Dr. Newsome holds two doctoral degrees and has served as an associate professor at Harvard University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has authored multiple books on leadership and is an ordained minister. His family shares a commitment to service, faith, education, and the local Calvert County area.

The appointment builds on Dr. Newsome’s initial selection as interim superintendent in August 2025, where the board highlighted his proven track record in Virginia districts and his alignment with local needs during a period of change. His steady guidance over the current school year helped maintain focus on student success amid the transition.

This decision ensures continuity in leadership for CCPS, which serves Southern Maryland families with a focus on educational excellence. The district’s official announcement underscores confidence in Dr. Newsome’s ability to drive ongoing progress.
