Lexington, Va. — The St Marys College of Maryland womens basketball team ended its season with a 73-44 loss to unbeaten Washington and Lee University on March 6, 2026, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Womens Basketball Championship at the Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center. The Seahawks finished 23-6 overall with a 13-0 United East Conference record while the Generals improved to 29-0. Washington and Lee dominated early with a 27-6 first quarter and led 48-15 at halftime before St Marys narrowed the gap slightly in the fourth.

Washington and Lee outshot St Marys 41.3 percent to 27.5 percent from the field and held a 46-28 rebounding edge. The Seahawks forced 17 turnovers for 10 points and scored 20 off the bench but struggled offensively against the hosts balanced attack.

First-year guard Skylar Woodyard and sophomore guard Samantha Blaylock led St Marys with 10 points each. Woodyard added three rebounds while Blaylock hit two three-pointers. Senior guard Tramarie Mobray scored nine points on 7-of-8 free throws. Junior forward Saffiyah Gibson added seven points. Junior forward Rayna Miller grabbed six rebounds to pace the boards.

For Washington and Lee, junior forward Mary Schleusner posted 22 points and 13 rebounds. Senior forward Sarah Zimmerman contributed eight points and five rebounds. The Generals scored 19 second-chance points and 38 in the paint.

The Seahawks appearance marked their first NCAA berth since 1999 after winning the United East title. St Marys, a public honors college in St Marys County, competes in Division III with a roster featuring local talent like Mobray from Baltimore and Blaylock from Annapolis. The team started 2025-26 with a 6-1 non-conference mark before sweeping league play, including a 69-55 championship win over Gallaudet on Feb 28.

Washington and Lee, from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, entered as the top seed with a 16-0 league record. The Generals average 82.4 points per game while allowing 51.2, ranking among national leaders in scoring margin. Schleusner leads with 18.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per contest.

The game drew 1054 fans in Lexington. Referees were DeMarcus Hubbard, Monnazjea Finney-Smith and Brian Wallace. St Marys shot 25 percent from three and 72.2 percent from the line while Washington and Lee hit 21.7 percent from beyond the arc and 64 percent at the stripe.

This loss caps a breakthrough year for St Marys under head coach C.K. McCullough in his fourth season. The Seahawks set a program record with 23 wins and claimed their first conference title since 2001. Key contributors included All-Conference selections Woodyard and Mobray, who averaged 14.2 and 12.8 points respectively.

Washington and Lee advances to face the winner of Christopher Newport and Penn State Harrisburg on March 7. St Marys graduates five seniors including Mobray and Miller, who combined for 1,248 career points.
