The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is expanding its youth fishing rodeo program in 2026, supporting a record 55 events across 15 counties to introduce children and teenagers to angling in a structured, supportive setting.
Youth Rodeo Coordinator Devin Baker announced the initiative, stating, “This is the largest number of events DNR has supported through the youth rodeo program. We’re gearing up to stock 2,900 hybrid sunfish, 1,400 channel catfish, and 5,250 rainbow trout for events across 15 counties.”

The program targets children and teenagers ages 3 to 15, offering free opportunities to build fishing skills, enjoy outdoor activity, and learn environmental stewardship. Events run from March through October, often in Maryland State Parks and other public lands. DNR partners with dozens of local organizations to host the rodeos, many of which include added elements like food and prizes to enhance the experience.
These events build on a tradition spanning more than 60 years in Maryland. They emphasize safety, basic angling techniques, and conservation awareness. Funding comes partly from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program, which supports conservation efforts statewide.
In 2025, the program served more than 4,000 children at 51 events. Officials anticipate surpassing that participation total this year with the increased number of rodeos and stocked fish.
A complete county-by-county schedule is available on the DNR website. All events are free and open to the public, but some locations have limited space. Families should check the online list for details and contact the provided phone number or email to register in advance. Attendees are advised to monitor for any last-minute cancellations or changes.
No fishing license is required for participants under 16. Adults and teens 16 and older can obtain licenses online or at authorized agents. Revenue from licenses, tackle, ammunition, boats, and marine fuel supports ongoing fish and wildlife conservation in Maryland.
The program encourages family involvement in outdoor recreation while ensuring young anglers have a high chance of success through pre-stocked waters. For full details and the current rodeo list, visit the DNR fisheries page dedicated to youth events.
