The National Art Education Association has selected Jennifer Jerrell, an Academic Specialist for the Apex Arts Magnet Program in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, as the 2026 recipient of its Art & Media Technology Outstanding Community Service Award, recognizing her leadership in expanding student access to media arts and technology education.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools announced the honor on March 12, 2026. Jerrell, a 20-year veteran of the district, received the award for her outstanding service advancing art and media technology education, particularly through her creation of the Anne Arundel Student Film & Digital Media Festival.

The festival provides students with a platform to showcase film, animation, and digital media projects, receive professional-level feedback, connect with peers, and view themselves as part of a broader creative community. It has broadened equitable access to digital tools, encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration, and positioned media arts as a key element of comprehensive visual arts education.
In her role, Jerrell leads curriculum development for the Apex Arts Magnet Program, ensuring instruction stays rigorous, innovative, and aligned with current digital and media arts practices. Colleagues praise her dedication to elevating student achievement and benefiting educators countywide.
“As a longtime member of the National Art Education Association, I am truly grateful for this recognition,” Jerrell said. “Establishing the festival was an important step in expanding community student media arts and technology offerings and allowed students a platform to showcase their work, connect with peers, and see themselves as part of a larger creative community.”
AACPS Coordinator of Visual Arts Casey Perkins added, “Jennifer’s leadership, dedication, and advocacy continue to benefit students and educators across our county.”
The award highlights Jerrell’s impact on Anne Arundel County students, many of whom live in communities near Southern Maryland borders, though the program operates primarily in Anne Arundel County. The National Art Education Association, a professional organization for art educators, presents such honors to members demonstrating exceptional contributions in specialized areas like media and technology.
